Azonnah Zaspar & Agencies, IMPHAL, Apr 28: At least eight people have been killed and 40 houses razed when Zeliangrong youths numbering about 60 attacked DHD (Jewel Group) at Jaduiram village, North Cachar Hills, Assam at about 3 pm today.

Today’s attack may be in retaliation to DHD (Jewel Group)’s attack in nine Zeliangrong villages last month, reports our Tamenglong correspondent quoting a source.

With Deputy Commissioner North Cachar Hills confirming the incident, army personnel have been sent to the area.

Haflong (Assam): Three women were killed and ten others injured when unidentified militants fired at Iabasti village in Assam’s hill district of North Cachar today.
A group of heavily armed ultras swooped on the village under Maibong police station and started firing indiscrimi-nately, the police said. The ultras also set afire houses in the remote village forcing panic-stricken villagers to flee. Three women, Mike Thousen, Jolai Langthasa and Ajmo Langthasa died on the spot and ten others were injured in the attack after which the ultras managed to flee.

Police reinforcements from district headquarter Haflong were rushed to control the situation. The injured villagers have been admitted to the Maibong Civil hospital.
Official reports coming from the interior of Maibong, a heavily militant-dominated area, said about 30 houses were torched by the Dimasa militants and most of the victims were non-Dimasas living in the area.

The Assam Police are sending commandos and special task force to quell insurgency in the troubled North Cachar hills district. This was informed by Assam Director-General of Police GM Srivastava who said Dimasa militants had an easy time in the past fortnight because the ''force was busy with election duty. Now that is over, we are going to take them on very hard.'' ''The situation in North Cachar Hills is anything but peaceful with Black Widow militants carrying out fre-quent attacks in the hills district, putting security forces and the government in a tight spot,'' he said.

The district has the highest deployment of security forces, which include 55 companies of Central Paramilitary Forces and Army personnel besides Assam Police.
