Agriculture is no longer the rustic farming activity reserved for illiterate farmers. Today it is a highly specialised field involving research and development and encompassing so many areas that there are numerous careers for young people to consider in this field. Agriculture is the source not only of food, but also of raw materials to manufacturing sector.
With opening up of Indian economy on one hand and increased in demand for agri-based products both domestically and internationally, the potential for growth in this sector immense.
Work Nature: The work in this field covers all areas of farming and all kinds of crops. Farming and agriculture also involves farm management, growing of crops and maintaining livestock under technically improved condition. It also includes manufacturing agro-products such as food products, cash crops and natural fibres. Research and training in Agriculture which includes developing new species, increasing yields and researching new agri-products and process are other areas of work in this profession.
Requirements: Physical stamina, an inquisitive bend of mind, patience, dedication, ability to work under difficult conditions, enterprising spirit, etc are some of the personnel attributes required by personnel working in field of Agriculture.
Eligibility: Contrary to earlier belief that no formal training was required for taking up farming and its allied fields, today it is advisable for persons interested in this field to undergo some sort of formal training in view of the growing competition and the use of advanced technology.
There are now large number of institutions which offer Graduate and Post-Graduate programmes in Agriculture and its allied fields. To be eligible for the B Sc in Agriculture, candidates should have passed their 10+2 examination with Science subjects and in most cases would also need to clear an entrance examination. While to be eligible for M Sc in Agriculture, candidates should have completed their B Sc in Agriculture or related fields. For courses in Agricultural Engineering, those with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics Or Agriculture are eligible.
The Indian Council of Agriculture Research, New Delhi conducts an all-India entrance examination for 15 percent of the seats in the State Agricultural Universities. Candidates should have passed 10+2 with 60 percent (55 percent for SC/ST) to be eligible to sit for the examination. The B Sc course in Agriculture is for a duration of four years, at the end of which a B Sc degree is awarded.
Some of the prominent institutions for the study of Agriculture include GP Pant University of Agriculture and Technology (Pant Nagar, UP), Haryana Agricultural University (Hissar), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (New Delhi), University of Agricultural Sciences (Bangalore), Gujarat Agriculture University (Anand District, Gujarat) and of course our own Central Agriculture University (CAU) at Iroisemba, and Manipur University at Canchipur.
Expert's opinion:
‘‘Prime importance of Agriculture is food security, and surplus of food production can ensure development of a country. In India's context too, contribution made by Agriculture in GDP growth is far more significant than by any other sector. So there is no chance of job dissatisfaction if a student wants to pursue a career in Agriculture and allied services. The prospect of growth is very high. However, to encourage more students to take study in Agriculture courses and reap the benefit, we need to increase the number of seats allotted to the State for Agriculture courses in CAU and augment the PG studies along with more faculty. Besides implementation of a State Agriculture Policy would be appreciable to identity the areas for cultivation of right type of crops and appoint right persons’.
