Tourism in Manipur, Tour operators given the cold shoulder

By Our Staff Reporter

IMPHAL, Mar 4: Despite the frenzy preparation being made by the Tourism Department of the State Government to attract tourists through organising Manipur Tourism Festival every year and the keenness supposedly shown towards conducting package tour, the tour operators have been given cold shoulder treatment denying permission by the Department on conducting the package tour.

During the course of further investigation conducted by The Sangai Express on why development of tourism in Manipur occupies a back-seat inspite of being blessed with bounteousness of the Mother Nature, it came to light that the although the Tourism Office at New Delhi had initiated package tour to attract tourists to visit Manipur, the Tourism Department has denied the private tour operators from conducting package tour.

As being practised in other States of the country, the Tourism Minister in 2006 entrusted the Tourism Department to take up necessary action for conducting package tour by the Tourism office of the State at New Delhi in association with other private tour operators. Consequently, the Faridabad based M/s Kapur Tours and Travels applied to the Tourism Department for conducting the proposed package tour.

However, the Department has not yet processed the application of the tour operator submitted through the office at New Delhi.

However, when contacted in this regard, Secretary of Tourism Department BB Sharma asserted that there is no question of denial of permission by the Government. There should be no restriction on conducting the package tour. In fact such tours should be promoted, he said.

Over the last many years, there have been no cases of rape, molestation, abduction of foreign tourists coming to Manipur, the officer added.

When countered why the Department denied permission to the interested tour operators from conducting the package tour, the officer simply assured that he would hold a detailed discussion on the matter.

Disclosing that the Department has formulated a policy for development of tourism in the State, BB Sharma pointed out that plans are afoot at the all India level to recruit ex-servicemen by the Directorate General of Resettlement which is under the Ministry of Defence for providing protection to foreign tourists coming to the country.

Responding to a question, BB Sharma informed that the Department is planning to organise the Manipur Tourism Festival at Imphal from March 12-16 every year.

According to information, last year, 1 lakh domestic tourists and around 400-500 foreign tourists visited Manipur.

It may be recalled here that out of more than 60 projects taken up by the State Tourism Department for development of tourism infrastructures in Manipur, 35 of them have been closed while 13 others have stopped midway.

TSE’s Believe It or Not ! ‘Dead at RIMS,’ infant comes alive at home !

By Our Staff Reporter

IMPHAL, Mar 4 : In a bizarre and fortunate turn of twist for the parents, a male child delivered at RIMS, which was thought to have died sprang to live when taken back home and while the necessary rites were being readied last night at about 10.30.

After the infant displayed that he was full of life, he was brought back to RIMS for further medical care and to be near his mother, who was still recuperating at the hospital !

Information received at the press said that a 30 year old woman identified as Begum Abeda alias Ibem-ton wife of Md Kaya- muddin of Yairipok Tulihal was brought to RIMS for a delivery case yesterday at about 12.30 pm and she was subsequently admitted to the Gynaecology Ward. This was the second delivery case for the woman.

The child was delivered yesterday at about 10.30 pm inside the ward. The baby was found with a defect on the head and at about 12.30 pm, one nurse came and the elder sister of the mother that child had passed away, said the source.

Following this Abeda was kept at the hospital and the supposedly dead child was taken home wrapped in a cloth at about 2.20 pm, said sources.

After the ‘body of the infant’ was brought to the house, it was kept at the verandah of the house and the brother-in-law of Abeda stayed over night at the verandah to guard the ‘baby’s body.’

To the joy of the family members, the supposedly dead baby started coughing at around 5 am today, prompting the brother-in-law to alert the family members.

On rushing to the verandah, the family members picked up the baby and after taking care of the immediate needs, rushed the baby to RIMS hospital today at 5.30 am.

Despite the happy turn around, family members were still skeptical whether the child would survive or not as the damage on the head was substantive.

NSCN-IM lambasts Sonia Gandhi’s remark

Newmai News Network

Dimapur, Mar 4: The Congress chief’s remark that “the Constitution of India has enough room to accommodate the aspirations of the Naga people within the framework of the Indian Constitution” has irked the NSCN-IM.

AICC president Sonia Gandhi had reportedly said this during her election campaign public rally in Nagaland on March 1. NSCN-IM has said on Tuesday that AICC president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s style of campaign in Nagaland and her manner of harping on Indo-Naga issue is abysmally repugnant to Naga taste. The outfit stated that the Indo-Naga issue is not to be treated as a subject of adventurism.

It also alleged that Sonia Gandhi’s approach is archaic and unfair and needs immediate changing. “Otherwise, her injudicious remark is to be treated as a matter of serious insult to the Nagas. Significantly, the state Congress members’ silent on Sonia Gandhi’s remark is shocking and surprising. Sonia’s remark has come an undesirable addition to the unpleasant remark left behind by National Security Advisor (NSA) MK. Narayanan during his visit to Kohima on February 16", fumed the NSCN-IM.

The Naga outfit then alleged that much to the chagrin of the Nagas it is getting all the more visible that the Congress is turning more capricious and going against historical reality. “This is not the solution the Nagas are seeking with the government of India, and this is not the commitment given to the Nagas,” asserted the NSCN-IM. The outfit further stated that historical reality should not be shown disrespect to recognize the Naga issue as a political issue.

“The political ethics demand that Indo-Naga issue should not be made the victim of political brinkmanship. But more than anything else Sonia’s irresponsible remark not only expressed her political immaturity but a breach of the unconditional terms that set off the Indo-Naga political talks ten years ago and with more than 60 rounds of talks, where the historically supported proposals of the Nagas had been tabled,” explained the NSCN-IM.

It also stated that the indulgence of Congress as “opportunist is dubiously exposed” through its election manifesto that stands for Naga integration, but the UPA’s Common Minimum Program (CMP) where the Congress stands for “territorial integrity”. “This double standard policy is the most uncultured Congress way of looking at the Indo-Naga issue,” pointed out the NSCN-IM.

There is no sincerity in the Congress approach to Indo-Naga political solution. And there is no political will in the hands of the Congress to solve the Indo-Naga crisis that begins more than 60 years ago in the Congress’ hands. “And what is the Congress’ meaning of honourable Indo-Naga solution?,” asked the outfit.

The statement of the Naga outfit said that such “duplicity” on the part of the Congress never fits into her place as provided by Indo-Naga history.

“Nagas have endured for more than 60 years of hardship with great fortitude. But to condition the Nagas to come first under the Indian Constitution is just another bombshell for the Nagas.

After all, Nagas have not fought for 60 years with blood and tears to accept the Indian Constitution,” clarifies the NSCN-IM today.
