Lamka, Sep 5: The Concert for Hungry 2008 programme commenced today from about 9.30 am at the YPA Hall in Churachandpur district.
The programme has been divided into two sessions with day time and night programmes. The day programme was attended as chief guest by the chief secretary of the state, Rakesh while other dignitaries like Phungzathang, minister for horticulture, science and technology and power attending as chief host.
The rest of the dignitaries including Hangkhanpau, MLA, T Manga Vaiphei, MLA, and V Hangkhanlian, MLA, also attended as host members along with P Vaiphei, secretary CRF and the DC Churachandpur Sumant Singh and the SP Manglemjao.
The chief secretary while speaking on the occasion said that he would do his best to overcome the famine that was being faced by the people of the district. P Vaiphei also highlighted the various steps taken by the government towards facing the famine.
T Phungzathang said that while the effect of the famine will plague the people of Mizoram for only one year as per the expert calculation, the people of the state will face for more than three years. Such being the case the government of the state have sought a fund to fight the calamity for the people of Churachandpur, Tamenglong, parts of Senapati and Chandel.
As a result Rs. 16.67 crores have been sanctioned by the Centre out of which Rs. 5.4 crores have been released.
The night programmes will be a concert to be held at the Ray Burn college campus for raising funds to help the famine victims. Three artistes from Mizoram will entertain the audience apart from some other local artistes.
