IMPHAL, Sept 5: The PHED & tourism minister, TN Haokip today inaugurated a water reservoir built at Mongjang village in the Churachandpur district by the public health engineering department at a cost of Rs 14.17 crore sanctioned from the non-lapsable central pool of resources, NLCPR, of the NEC.
Expressing happiness over the installation of the water reservoir, the PHED minister said this will ensure that the villager in the area will now have access to clean piped drinking water.
However he cautioned against the short-sighted practice in Manipur whereby the public are given to rupturing steel pipes of the government department so as to tap water in unauthorised manner.
He said the villagers must ensure that such things do not happen and realise that preserving the reservoir and its supply system is in their own interest ultimately.
He said the contract culture in Manipur has also destroyed all quality control in government development work, and in preventing this, the cooperation of all is vital.
He said the reservoir is fed by two streams, Koite and Loklai, and the people in the area must ensure that their catchments are not destroyed through logging and deforestation. Should any of these streams dry up, the reservoir will be rendered useless, he added.
The minister also said that the request of the villagers that the reservoir should have a chowkidar and waterman to look after it, will be forwarded to the chief minister and efforts would be made to have it implemented.
Tribal development department chairman T Manga Vaiphei said the reservoir will make adequate clean drinking water available to 42,150 villagers, calling it a big achievement of the SPF government.
He also called on the people to treat the reservoir as their own property and take good care of it. The attitude the government property is different from private property must be put an end to, he said. Government property is the people’s property, he said.
The function was also attended by various officials and village authorities.
