Sonia declares Rs 1.38cr assets; owns no car or house

RAE BARELI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi has assets worth around Rs 1.38 crore but has no car or house in her name in the country. The Congress leader owns an ancestral house in Italy, which has an estimated market value of Rs 18.05 lakh.

The UPA chairperson has Rs 75,000 in cash and deposit of over Rs 28.61 lakh in UCO bank, according to the affidavit filed by her before the district electoral officer.

She also has investments of Rs 20 lakh in mutual funds and holds RBI bonds worth Rs 12 lakhs besides 10 shares of Maruti technical services private limited and 500 shares of Western India Tanneries Limited.

Gandhi has invested Rs 1.99 lakh in National Saving Scheme and has a deposit of Rs 24.88 lakh in personal provident fund (PPF).

The Congress president has jewellery worth Rs 11.08 lakh besides 88 kg of silver ware worth Rs 18.37 lakh.

Gandhi owns agricultural land worth Rs 2.19 lakhs in Sultanpur and Deramandi villages.

The Rae Bareli MP paid Rs 5.58 lakh as income tax in the 2008-09 besides paying a wealth tax of Rs 32,512.

Gandhi does not have any bank loan or any other liabilities against her, according to the affidavit.

Her son Rahul Gandhi has assets worth around Rs 2.25 crore including two farm houses and shops in Delhi. - PTI

Sonia Gandhi files nomination from Rae Bareli

RAE BARELI (PTI): Seeking re-election, Congress President Sonia Gandhi today filed her nomination papers from Rae Bareli, one of two seats in the Nehru-Gandhi family's pocketborough, in the presence of her son and party leader Rahul Gandhi.

Draped in a checked cotton saree, 62-year-old Sonia, who won her first eelctions from neighbouring Amethi in 1999, came to the Returning Officer's office here in a cavalcade.

Sonia was given a rousing reception by enthusiastic party workers who showered rose petals on her car on the way to the office of the returning officer where the Congress President filed the nomination papers.

Following the traditions of the Nehru-Gandhi family, Sonia and Rahul attended a puja at the Congress office here before they left for filing nominations.

Carrying placards with pictures of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, party workers shouted slogans praising their leaders and waved Congress flags.

Sonia is seeking mandate from Rae Bareli for the thrid time. She had won from here in 2004 and resigned from the post after the office-of-profit controversy erupted. She won by a thumping margin in the 2006 by-elections.
