Five students booked under NSA, 8 get bail

IMPHAL, Jun 2 : Of the 13 students apprehended by police following the killing of Prof Islamuddin, five have been detained under National Security Act while eight other have been released on bail.

Soon after the killing of Prof Islamuddin in MU campus on May 25, seven persons were picked up by police from MU campus on suspicion for verification. They were formally arrested the next day. Six other persons were also arrested on May 26.

All 13 of them were produced before the Court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West.

Even as the Prosecutor pleaded to grant remand till June 16, the Court did not consider the matter as orders to detain five of the arrested persons under NSA had been already issued.

However, eight of them were released on bail after surety bond of Rs 30,000 was furnished as sufficient evidence could not be produced to indict them in connection with the killing of Prof Islamuddin.
