Manipur HSLC Topper Waikhom Nydia talks

IMPHAL, May 31 : “As a student, what most disturbed me was staging protest demonstrations and taking out rallies instead of attending class against monetary demands made to the school”, said HSLC Exam 2009 topper, Waikhom Nydia of Padma Ratna English School, Kakching.

Talking to The Sangai Express, Nydia, daughter of W Ibotombi and Radhamani of Kakching Super Market, said that the standard of education in Manipur is quite low in comparison to other States.

She confided that she was thinking of doing her secondary schooling at Hyderabad before plunging into IT engineering.

Quality education did not necessarily mean getting marks but the capability to compete with other students, Nydia opined.

Recalling one incident which caused severe mental disturbance, Nydia conveyed that one day in 2005 when she was reading in class VII at Padma Ratna English School, all the students had to forgo their daily classes to take out a protest rally against a monetary demand made by a UG group.

“The incident left a negative impression on the young students including myself”, she said.

Knowing that what was taught in the class-room would not be enough, Nydia went for private tuition for all subjects except Biology. On Sundays, she went to Imphal to learn extra knowledge from teachers, she said.

Confiding that she never believed she would top the merit list, Nydia gave credit for her outstanding achievement to her parents and teachers.

Nydia’s father, Ibotombi is an ambulance driver of CHC Kakching while her mother, Radhamani is a nurse at District Hospital Thoubal.

Being employed in emergency services, often both the parents have to stay away from home even at night.

“Except for asking their requirements on some rare occasions when we were free, we could not monitor the children closely”, Ibotombi said.

Assistant Teacher in Padma Ratna English School, Ksh Manilal said that with private schools mushrooming these, competition among the schools has attained a new level.
