IMPHAL, Nov 26 – The journalist community in Manipur today staged a silent protest rally against extra-judicial killings. Condemning the killing of Konsam Rishikanta, a sub-editor of The Imphal Free Press by unknown gunmen on November 17, the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union members armed with festoons and placards took to the streets.
AMWJU has been demanding a judicial inquiry into the killing. But there’s no positive response from the State Government. Journalists from Churachandpur, Senapati and Tamenglong districts and over 2,000 representatives of various civil society organizations and NGOs also participated in the rally.
Later, the protesters strongly condemned the State Government’s move to disturb the rally by prohibiting the rallyists from entering Imphal in time.
