Mizoram Bru Refugees lodged in Camps in Tripura refused to cast their vote

Mizoram Bru Refugees lodged in Camps in Tripura refused to cast their vote in the Postal Ballot papers given to them. Our Correspondent reported from the spot that the Bru refugees in six camps objected the postal ballot papers which do not indicate the symbols of the candidates.

Talking to the Election Officials, the Bru leaders asserted that most of the voters in the camps are illiterate who can not read and write and the symbols of the candidate is required for them. They also complaint Summary Revision of the Electoral Rolls in the camps. They alleged that many names of the voters are excluded in the electoral rolls. In some camps, the voters took out procession in the morning and blocked the polling stations to prevent casting of votes. The Asst. Returning Officers and Polling Officers in the camps and the Special Observer, Mr. Debashi Sen immediately informed the matter to the Election Commission and the Chief Electoral Officer of Mizoram, Mr. Lalmalsawma. Replying to ZONET question, the Chief Electoral Officer said that Election Commission has asked Mizoram Election Department about the feasibility of printing the postal ballot papers with symbols of the candidate. In reply to this, the State Election Department informed the Election Commission that this will not be a problem but it may take a bit of time as it would be necessary to take it to the camps. The Joint Chief Electoral Officer, Mr. Lalhmingthanga said that the postal ballot papers indicating symbols of the candidate is under printing and preparation for polling on the next Friday and Saturday is going on.

Meanwhile electionering is approaching to the feverish pitch in most of the constituencies. The MNF President, Mr. Zoramthanga continues non-stop campaign in both Champhai North and South constituencies while the Congress President, Mr. Lal Thanhawla is busy campaigning in Serchhip constituency. The UDA Chief Ministerial Candidate, Brig. T. Sailo and the Deputy Chief Ministerial Candidate, Mr. Lalduhoma are busy campaigning in their respective constituencies. The campaign planks of the MNF candidates included publicity of their major achievements during the last 10 years of MNF Government, Mizoram State Health Care Scheme which enabled a number of non-government servant families to claim their MR bills, distribution of free ration to familes getting an income less than 10 thousand rupees a month, National Rural Health Mission, creation of employment opportunities for the rural people under NREGS. They also claimed that the MNF Party is the best to continue the on going projects and schemes already afooted in various places. With a promise to form a good government of the people including the poor which will eradicate corruption from the root, the Congress woo the voters to vote the Party to power. It also publicized the revised NLUP for creation of permanent occupation for the rural people. Meanwhile the UDA publicize their aim to form good government, fight against corruption from the highest position, building of essential infrastructure including generation of more power, construction of good network of road and proper transport system.

In Aizawl, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. C. Thanchhuma and officers in charge of Security arrangement discussed security arrangement in his office today. The discussion included sensitive and hyper sensitive polling stations and the security forces to be deployed there. In the polling stations near Manipur border, Para Military Force including Assam Rifles, the State Armed Police and IR Battalion will be deployed for Election duty. The District Magistrate also stressed the need to observe the polling day as a dry day, free from all forms of intoxicants including liquor. Meanwhile the entire district has been sub divided into 13 sectors, each of which will be meant by Sectoral Magistrate.

The Deputy Commissioner of Mamit, Mr. Zothankhuma who also is represtly acting as the District Election Officer inspected the strong room with the Election Observers, Mr. KN Bhatt and AK Agarwal yesterday. The inspection team included candidates and their election agents. Later, the randomized Electronic Voting Machines were sealed in the DC Office to be taken out by the polling parties just before their departure to their respective place of duty.

Meanwhile the State Transport Department also announced that there will be no State Transport bus service departing from Aizawl on the 1st and 2nd December to enable the staff to cast their votes on the polling day in their respective polling stations.

The President of Mizoram State Cooperative Union, Mr. P. Lalthangzauva said, Mizoram Cooperative Society can not involve in any Political activity. Addressing reporters in his office today, the MSCU President said that Mizoram State Cooperative Union is to gladly accept with open heart the verdic of the people whatever it may be. Referring to some groups of persons within the society who have propagated political matters relating to elections, the MSCU President said Cooperative Society should not be converted into the arena for politics.

Mizoram Consumer Union (MCU) and voluntary organizations asked the government to replace the new rate of bus fare with the old rate. In a resolution passed in the joint meeting held in the MCU office today, the voluntary organizations said that the price of petrol and diesel oil are the cheapest in Mizoram as compared to other states of the country and the old rate of bus fares for City Bus, Town Bus and Bazar Bus was still the highest as compared to the rates of other hill states. Terming the new rate enforced from August this year as too high and creating hardships to the general public, the poor people and the student community, they asked the Government to cancel the new rate and replace it with the old rate. A sub Committee has also been constituted to look into the bus fare in consultation with the prevailing price index and other rules in force for reviewing the bus fares. The meeting also discussed shortage and scarcity of cooking gas for ordinary people, they asked the Government to enforce Gas Marketing Guidelines and the control order with immediate effect. The meeting was attended among others by representatives ofMUP, MZP, MICLUN, Vegetable Seller Association, Consumer Club leaders in Schools and other organizations and unanimously expressed support to the views of Mizoram Consumer Union.

The new building of Special Blind School in Durtlang constructed at the cost of over 25 lakh, 65 thousand rupees was inaugurated by the Officer on Special Duty, Mr. Robert Romawia Royte yesterday. Addressing the function, Mr. Romawia asked the school authority to provide facilities for the physically handicapped students to make the school homely for them. Peoples Right to Information and Development Implementing Society of Mizoram (PRISM) filed PIL in Aizawl Bench of Guahati High Court demanding investigation into the alleged misutilization of a large amount of fund under the NEC’s SPINE scheme. In a press release, PRISM said that the Centre has asked the Government of Mizoram to investigate into the alleged misutilization of fund by engaging CBI.

2nd IR Battalion personnel coming back from Chhatisgarh arrived in Aizawl today. They were received by their family members at Hunthar Veng and have a happy reunion. Of the 3 Companies who arrived in Aizawl today, one of them is to proceed to the Battalion Hqrs. in Khawzawl to be deployed in election duty in Champhai District. Two other companies are staying back in Aizawl to perform election duties within Aizawl district.
