Tripura records highest road mishap rates

AGARTALA, Nov 25 – Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar on Tuesday admitted that Tripura has recorded highest rate of fatal road mishaps in comparison to other States despite precautionary measures.

According to official figures, a total of 779 passengers and drivers were killed while as many as 4,815 suffered injuries from 2005 to September, 2008. In 2007, altogether 801 road mishaps were recorded in the State that had claimed 223 lives.

Replying to a calling attention notice moved by opposition leader Ratan Lal Nath, Chief Minister said that the worst ever road accident that took place near Gokulnagar on November 11 had claimed 11 including two drivers of the collided vehicles. The incident left 19 passengers wounded, he said.

Sarkar said that the mishap took place due to rash and negligent driving of the drivers.

Expressing serious concern over growing incidence of road mishaps, Chief Minister hinted at using speed-monometers to control the speed of vehicles.

“We are looking for implementing various measures to check the road mishaps in the State”, he said. The measures include using of speed-monometers, laying of rumble strips at accident-prone points and proper implementation of MV Act.

As of now, the Traffic police need at least 25 speed monometers to ensure effective monitoring of vehicles plying in different important roads. The tender of supplying speed-monometers has not been finalized. The process will be finalized very shortly, Sarkar said.

However, opposition leader wanted stringent measures to check the fatal road accidents. According to Nath, the quantum of punishment under the MV Act should be increased substantially to deal with the situation.

In reply, Chief Minister assured the House that the government would explore the feasibility of the demands.
