CAREER IN HOME SCIENCE

Selection of a career depends on one’s social and educational aptitude. Apart from social and family expectations, needs and demands in one’s life also help in deciding a proper career. Besides internal and external factors, one’s academic potential, struggle to achieve the target career, perservance, hardships and connections all are the deciding factors of what one “can be” in one’s life.

Similar factors affect the planning of a career in home science. Students opt for home science as a subject at senior secondary level. Students can go for higher education of home science i.e. graduation –B.Sc. - Home Science, if they have good marks in home science and English at senior secondary level.

Five major branches of home science are taught in these colleges viz.foods and nutrition, child development, home management, clothing and textiles, extension and communications.

The students can opt for home science based courses in University of Delhi e.g. Nutrition and health education, Child Development and family welfare services.

B.Sc. Home Science at graduation level is further divided into pass course and honours course.

For pass course – introduction to social science, psychology, sociology, economics, life sciences, physical sciences are basic subjects. English is qualifying. The students need to study Home Science based major subjects in the span of three years. The major subjects are enunciated.

Food Science: Physiology and promotive health, normal nutrition, community nutrition and dietetics, nutritional biochemistry.

Fundamentals of Resource Management : Housing, Interiors and Space Design, Family Finance and Consumer Studies, Basics of Interior Decoration.

Foundations of Human Development : Development in Childhood, Development in Adolescence, adulthood, Human rights and family empowerment.

Introduction to Fabric and Apparel Science: Essentials of Fabric Science, Apparel Construction, Apparel and Textile design.

Fundamentals of Communi-cation and Extension : Media systems, Extension Programmes, Managerial and Entrepreneurship development, Development Journalism.

In B.Sc. (Home Science) honours, introduction to sociology (society and culture) introduction to psychology, promotive health and physiology, applied economics, applied chemistry and physics, applied biology are the basic subjects. English is qualifying. The subjects for further specialization in any one of the five majors are as under :

Foundations of Food and Nutrition: Nutrition for the family, Nutritional Biochemistry, Community Nutrition, Food Science and Processing, Diet Therapy.

Introduction to Resource Management: Family finance and consumer studies, housing and space design, Ergonomics in Design Development, Interior design and decoration, entrepreneurship and institutional management.

Introduction to human development: know yourself, socio- cultural dimensions of family in India, Foundations of human development, Theories and Principles, gender empowerment and justice, human development, lifespan approach, children and adults with programme needs

Fundamentals of fabric and Apparel Science : Apparel for children and adolescents, fabric science, Indian textiles, advanced apparel construction, Apparel and Textile Design.

Dynamics of Communication and Extension: women’s issues and concerns, media systems and communication technology, sustainable development- initiatives and approaches, development communication and journalism; extension programme design and management.

The subject has multidisci-plinary character of both pass and honours courses. The subject helps in all round development of personality of its students. The course provides the students with theoretical as well as practical perspective of the content. The course inculcates not only the appreciation of arts but also the technical knowhow of practical skills as the students do internship in their specializations. In all, the course develops positive virtues in the students.

B.Sc. Home Science at Delhi is offered at Lady Irwin College and Institute of Home Economics. Many private colleges are also offering certificate courses in home science and home science based courses. Many foreign universities are also coming up with their home science courses and home science based courses. However the following universities have also been recognized by UGC for studying home science (10+2+3) as a subject at the graduate level.

The students who are not able to score sufficient to be in home science college can go for home science based courses offered in different colleges at University of Delhi, Delhi. To name a few courses-nutrition and health education, child development and family welfare, women’s’ studies, education of children with special needs, textile designing, fashion designing etc.

The students can also go to polytechnic for understanding the skill and knowledge of various specializations of home science.
