Mizoram Assembly Poll starts today

December 2, 2008: Mizoram goes to polls today. All arrangements are complete for polling in 40 Assembly Constituencies and all the polling personnel are positioned in their respective polling stations. The Chief Electoral Officer, Mr. Lalmalsawma said, most of the polling parties have reported back their arrival in their polling stations and smooth and peaceful polling is expected.
Earlier the Chief Electoral Officer had asked the voters to exercise their franchise to elect their representatives in the State Legislative Assembly. Meanwhile the DGP Mr. Lalrokhuma Pachuau told Zonet that adequate number of security personnel have been deployed for election duty to ensure peaceful polling. He also said, central para-military forces and the state Armed police are deployed in the sensitive and hyper-sensitive polling station which are in the vicinity of international and neighbouring state boundaries. As already stated the government has declared holiday for the polling day tomorrow and the polling hours is from 7 A.M - 4 P.M tomorrow.

As already reported, 206 candidates are in the fray to contest for 40 seats in the State Legislative Assembly. Six lakh, twelve thousand four hundred and thirty nine voters in the electoral roll are to choose their representives among these candidates. The MNF President, Mr. Zoramthanga is contesting in both Champhai North and South Constituencies while the Congress President, Mr. Lal Thanhawla also is contesting in Serchhip and South Tuipui constituencies. The ZNP President, Mr. Lalduhoma also is contesting in Tuivawl and Aizawl West I constituencies while the UDA Chief Minister Candidate Brig. T. Sailo contests only in Aizawl West II seat. Meanwhile, polling in six Bru Camps in Tripura and 2 transit Camps in Mizoram were completed yesterday. The used ballot boxes have also been brought back to Mamit this morning and kept in the Strong room. The election Official told Zonet that of the 8,373 voters in the rolls, 6,577 of them cast their votes by Postal Ballot Papers and the voting percentage is 78.55.

Three 2nd IR battalion personnel and the Driver were injured in a road accident between Zohmun and Palsang village. According to Police Sources, the Gypsy carrying security personnel for polling duty in Palsang Polling Station ran out of the road yesterday afternoon and rolled down about 30 metres from the road surface. Constable Lalchhandama, Havilder Vanlalhriata, Constable Zaithantluanga and the ill-fated Driver are injured and they are brought to Aizawl Civil Hospital. Meanwhile, the polling party for Palsang Polling Station has been stationed and all arrangement for tomorrow’s polling has been made.

Constable Kewette of Nagaland Armed Police committed suicide yesterday in their Camp in Luangmual. According to Police sources, the Constable shot himself at his head by his service rifle and died on the spot. After postmortem examination conducted in Aizawl Civil Hospital, the body was sent to Nagaland by Mizoram Government.

Mizoram State Health Care Society asked the people not to panic for delay of re-imbursement of their medical bills. Talking to Zonet, the Chief Executive Officer of Mizoram State Health Care Society, Dr. Sangzuala Pachuau said, the Authority in Reliance Insurance Company has been contacted on phone today and the company has agreed to clear the pending bills immediately. Meanwhile, Zonet understands that the accumulated pending bills of Medical Re-imbursement claim of patients belonging to non-government servants group has gone up to over 400 lakhs. For non-payment of the bills Civil Hospital Canteen and Emy Drug Store have virtually stopped issue of Medicines on credit on the prescription of the Doctors plunging the patients into trouble.

Commuters in Aizawl City faced acute shortage of public transport today and many people are seen waiting for bus in the bus stations. This is mainly because of requisitioning of the City Buses for elections. Aizawl City Bus Owners Association told Zonet that only 48 buses were placed into service today as many of them have been hired by the candidates for transporting the voters in their respective constituencies.

Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) congratulated boxer Mary MC Kom for winning Gold medal in 46 kg category of AIBA World Boxing Championship held recently in China. MZP also said, this is the 4th consecutive victory of Mary Kom in the World level Boxing Championship which is a big laurel for Mizo Tribes.
