Manipur scribes suspend ceasework

SOBHAPATI SAMOM

IMPHAL, Dec 1 – Finally Manipur Government has decided to conduct a CBI inquiry into the killing of journalist Rishikanta. Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh chaired a Cabinet meeting that took the decision today. On November 17, Konsam Rishikanta, sub-editor of the Imphal Free Press, was gunned down at Langol range under Lamphel police station in Imphal West district.
Protesting the incident, the journalists community under All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union(AMWJU) have been on a cease work strike since November 20 resulting in closure of publication of the local newspapers in the State till date.

Demanding judicial inquiry and necessary assistance from the government, the journalists community along with civil society organizations had staged a mass silent protest rally against the killing on November 26 last.

However, considering the State Government’s move to conduct CBI inquiry, the striking journalists in an emergency general body meeting at the Manipur Press Club premises today decided to “suspend the ongoing strike” and resume publication from Tuesday.
