Mizoram polls may throw up a hung Assembly

NEWMAI NEWS

AIZAWL, Dec 3 – With the Assembly elections over in Mizoram, the general opinion here is that the State is heading for a hung Assembly. People have the feeling that no alliance or party will be able to get the magic number to form government on its own in the 40-member Assembly.

In the December 2 Assembly election there was a triangular contest among the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), main opposition Congress and United Democratic Alliance (UDA). UDA is again an alliance of Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC), Zoram Kuthnathawktu Pawl (ZKP) and Zoram National Party (ZNP).

Speculations have it that Chief Minister Zoramthanga and his MNF retaining power may not be a reality this time. Corruption charges against him are seen as a blow to his hope of coming back to power.

Though the Congress is upbeat and a slight inclination of the voters towards the party is indicated, it is believed that the Congress’ chance of obtaining the magic number is a far dream.

The third front, the UDA, has the least cutting edge among the three groups.

With this arithmatic, the chances of Congress or the MNF of grabbing power in Mizoram may be decided by whom the UDA supports.

Observers here feel that the under-dog UDA may emerge the King-maker.
