Arunachal celebrates 23rd Statehood Day

ITANGAR, Feb 20 – Amidst a strong protest rally staged by the agitating State Government employees decrying the government’s alleged failure to meet their pay package demand, the hilly Northeastern State of Arunachal Pradesh today celebrated its 23rd Statehood Day with a day-long programme showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the tribal State to the outside world.

The celebration coincided with the opening of a three-day festival of Arunachal by the State Governor General (Retd) JJ Singh by releasing some balloons in the air in presence of a big gathering that included Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu and other Ministers, MLAs, government officials and general public at Indira Gandhi Park here.

Extending his greetings to the people, the Governor, who earlier unfurled the national tri-colour and took salute from the men in khaki said that 20th February is a red letter day in the history of Arunachal Pradesh.

In the last 22 years, our State has made tremendous progress in every field of development, and the last one year saw a surge in the pace. With the Prime Minister’s mega developmental package of Rs 20,000 crore giving impetus to it, the infrastructural development in terms of road, air and rail communications, power projects, health and rural development scaled new heights, he said.

Statehood Day is the day of rejoicing as well as a reminder to all of us to contribute our bit for building a happy, prosperous and peaceful Arunachal, said Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu, who has completed 22 months in office.

Khandu, however, expressed his deep anguish over the ongoing indefinite strike by State Government employees demanding full implementation of Sixth Central Pay Commission (CPC) recommendations, thus compelling the resource-poor State pass through a difficult stage.

Reiterating his governments helplessness to concede the pay package demand of the agitating employees in absence of any special grant from the Centre, the Chief Minister said, The State Government, despite its resource crunch, has already implemented a revised pay package as Sixth CPC report besides agreeing to release six months arrears to its employees, and became the first State in North East region and one of few in the country to do so.
