Expressing disappointment over the misconception of Mizoram being a disturbed area, trade and commerce minister Lalrinliana Sailo has said the state is still overlooked even after ASEAN and some European countries showing their interest in investing in the North East.
“I am really disappointed to learn that many people still perceive Mizoram as a disturbed area despite the fact that the State is enjoying the status of one of the most peaceful States in India,” Sailo said, while giving a report on the recent North East Trade and Investment Summit at Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam which he attended with state trade and commerce officials and entrepreneurs here.
Blaming the misconception as the reason why investors and tourists were not attracted to Mizoram, Sailo stressed, “we should make use of the peaceful atmosphere besides, the huge potential in horticulture, handloom and handicrafts and tourism sectors to attract investors.”
The delegates who attended the Summit left no stone unturned to showcase Mizoram as an attractive investment destination, and owing to their efforts investors from the ASEAN countries as well as many European nations have also shown their interest in investing in the state.
“Among others, we have convinced EXIM Bank to organise export awareness campaign in Mizoram in the near future,” the minister said. As many as seven trade agreements were signed during the summit, four with Assam and the rest with Manipur. The two States had participated at ‘North East India Trade and Investment Opportunities Week’ in Bangkok and a North East Investment Opportunity Day in New York, organised by the Indian government earlier, and the trade agreements were an outcome of it, the officials said. “We will make all-out effrts to have global companies sign such trade agreements with Mizoram,” the minister vowed.
Trade and commerce secretary Esther Lalruatkimi, who accompanied the minister at the Summit, also expressed concern that Mizoram still remains ‘unknown’ to the rest of the world despite having a good investment environment.
“No one from outside will come to find out what kind of qualities we are having, therefore it is a must to expose ourselves to the world,” she said, while also regretting that she could hardly find articles and information about Mizoram in the internet.
