Churachandpur Rally Strongly Condemns T-Phaizol Rape

IMPHAL, Jul 17: Thousands of people demonstrated in Churachandpur town Tuesday to protest the rape of a 20-year old housewife by suspected militants on July 9 last.

Many taking part in the event carried placards with slogans like `Go to hell valley UGs`, `We condemn rape of tribal women`, `Beware valley UGs, your days are numbered`, `Respect women`, `Territorial integrity for what`, `State govt. swing into action or perish`, `PLA, are you trained to rape or fight`, `Fly away valley based UGs` and `Rape your own people not tribals` etc.

At the concluding part of the rally, a memorandum was submitted to the deputy commissioner of Churachanpur district.

The memorandum recalled the mass rape of Hmar women in Parbung by UGs and demanded that all the pending rape cases in the hill areas of the state including that of T-Phaizol and Parbung be immediately solved.

The government should at any cost not delay or compromise on the demands of the women, it said while demanding full protection and care of the women from the state authorities.

They also called for justice for the victim woman and appropriate rehabilitation measures as per agreement between KSO, Churachandpur and the state government.

In the memorandum, it was also mentioned that the joint women`s organizations, Churachandpur had decided not to make further demands if they were not given the rehabilitation/compensation for rapes committed on tribal women by valley UGs and others again in future.

They said they were ready to retaliate with befitting punishment with whatever means they had, as they prefered to die than being molested and raped, and the state government whom they reposed trust in and depended upon, would solely be responsible for the consequences.

The memorandum also demanded the state government take appropriate action against newspapers which misguided the public and underestimated the rights and dignity of tribal women.

DC, Churachandpur, Sumant Singh while briefing the crowd gathered at his office at Tuibong promised that the district administration would try its best to provide justice and relief to the victim and her family by apprising the state government.

More than 3000 women and girl students of different schools in the district participated in the protest rally which marched down the streets of Churachandpur district headquarters.

The rally kicked off from Churachandpur public ground and proceeded towards IB road and took the Tiddim road before following the road to the DC`s office. It was organized jointly by Hmar Women`s Association, Zomi Mothers Association, Kuki Women`s Union and MPC etc. Members of the Ima Leimarol Apunba Lup, Churachandpur also took part in the rally.

Market places, shops and other institutions in the town remained closed down for the day showing solidarity to the rally.

A public meeting was also held at the concluding part of the rally at which all the speakers condemned the act of the armed miscreants in the strongest terms.

Speaking at the meeting, Gunapati Devi of Ima Leimarol Apunba Lup, Churachandpur called on all sections of women to condemn the act. She said, "there is no caste, creed or religion for women."

She also said that all women`s organizations should come out and stand united to fight against the increasing violence on women.

Mention may be made that police witnesses and the victim have claimed that three cadres of PLA killed by a combined force of police commandos and 22 Marath Li on July 15 in Bishnupur district were the culprits behind the rape of a housewife at T-Phaizol village in Churachandpur district.

The RPF/PLA confirming that the three slain in Bomdiyar area were deserters from one of its units, in a statement said that they had deserted its 252 battalion on the evening of July 5, four days ahead of the rape incident.

A 20-year old housewife, mother of two children, Lamneilhing was raped by three gunmen suspected to be militants in the presence of her two minor children at T-Phaijol village in Churachandpur district on July 9. She was raped in broad daylight at a hut standing at a jhum field.

The incident incensed the people of the Churchandpur district particularly and the people of the state in general.
