Manipur Cabinet has decided to extend the disturbed area status in the State for another year “excluding” the Imphal Municipal area following recommendation of State police as well as central security forces deployed in Manipur for re-imposition of the Armed Forces (Special Power) Act (AFSPA). Official sources said the decision to extend the disturbed area status for another year to other parts of the State except area covered by the Imphal municipal, which has been lifted four year back, was taken in a Cabinet meeting held Wednesday evening under the chairmanship of state chief minister O Ibobi Singh. Since the imposition of AFSPA in Manipur some thirty years ago, the State government has been reviewing the act every year.
The latest extension of AFSPA in the State will expire on November 30 this year. However, the decision to exclude Imphal municipal area did not reportedly go well with the security establishments countering insurgency in the state as highly placed sources disclosed that security forces, state police, Assam Rifles, Army, BSF and CRPF, all favoured re-declaration of disturbed area status in Imphal municipality area too.
