Jamir disappointed with NE insurgency

Governor of Maharashtra S. C. Jamir Thursday said that Northeast was one of the most beautiful and ethnically and linguistically diverse regions of the country.

He however expressed disappointment that the region has been troubled by insurgency for the last few decades while inaugurat¬ing the cultural festival of Northeastern States, ‘OC¬TAVE’ in Mumbai, stated a press release.

Jamir said insurgency and violence were adversely affecting the progress of the Northeastern region while other regions of the country were prospering because of the peaceful atmosphere. In this connection, he called upon the artists from the Northeast to convey the message of peace to the people of the region.

Festivals such as the Northeastern Cultural Festival enable different people of the country to know each other better and create emotional integra¬tion of the nation, he said. Jamir appealed the people of Maharashtra to watch the beautiful artistic traditions of the Northeast to know the region better.

Alemla Jamir, wife of SC Jamir; Ram Pradhan, for¬mer Governor of Arunachal Pradesh; Ashok Chavan, Minister of Culture, Gov¬ernment of Maharashtra; Dr Vijaya Mehta, Director of National Centre for Per¬forming Art and Directors of Zonal Cultural Centres and a large number of people were present on the occasion.

The five-day festival showcasing the folk dance, classical dance, literature, theatre, visual art and hand¬icraft of the Northeast is be¬ing organised by the Minis¬try of Culture, Government of India, the South Central Zone Cultural Centre, Nag¬pur and the Directorate of Culture, Government of Maharashtra.
