Thursday, November 20, 2008: Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga and former chief minister and state PCC chief Lal Thanhawla have come out as two of the richest candidates in coming Mizoram assembly election.
Fourty-member Mizoram assembly will go to polls on December 2. Chief Minister Zoramthanga has declared that he has Rs 1.46 crore worth assets including immovable properties worth lakhs of rupees.
Former Chief Minister and PCC Chief Lal Thanhawla is richer than Zoramthanga by almost Rs 1 crore. Lal Thanhawla's declaration submitted along with his nomination papers said he has assets worth Rs 2.22 crore and he owns five expensive vehicles.
Thanhawla is the only candidate against whom corruption cases are pending in the court. However, declarations made by the candidates revealed that former Mizoram assembly speaker R Lalawia, having Rs 61.82 crore worth assets, is the richest candidate.
Meanwhile, former Chief Minister and chief ministerial candidate of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Brig Thenphunga Sailo is one of the poor of candidates with assets worth Rs 30 lakh and a car.
Lalduhoma, President of Zoram Nationalist Party and Deputy Chief Ministerial candidate of UDA declared that he has assets worth Rs 67 lakh and two vehicles.
R Vanlalvena of Congress, contesting from prestigious Aizawl South-I constituency for the first time, is not only one of the youngest candidates, but the poorest with assets worth Rs 53,776.
