Aizawl, Nov 15: As many as 205 candidates are in the fray for the December 02 election to the 40-member Mizoram Assembly as the last date of withdrawal of nominations was ended on Saturday, official sources said. Of the 205 candidates, nine are women, the sources said. Z D Dengngura, an independent candidate from Lunglei south seat, was the only candidate to have withdrawn nomination. Officials said while 72 candidates are in fray in Aizawl district, 30 candidates are contesting from Lunglei district. Champhai district has 24 candidates in the electoral race and Lawngtlai has 13 aspirants.
Kolasib, Mamit and Serchhip districts, which have three seats each, have 18, 22 and 15 candidates respectively, while Saiha which has two seats has 11 contestants, they added.
The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) was contesting 39 seats while its junior pre-poll partner, the Mara Democratic Front (MDF), had fielded one candidate.
The opposition Congress was contesting all the 40 seats and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) fielded candidates in 39 seats.
United Democratic Alliance (UDA), an alliance of Mizoram People's Conference (MPC) and Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP), were contesting 37 seats.
The BJP put up candidates in eight seats and NCP fielded candidates in seven seats.
Chief Minister and MNF chief Zoramthanga is contesting from two seats - Mizoram-Myanmar border Champhai South and Champhai North, while former chief minister and state PCC chief Lal Thanhawla also fielded his nominations from Serchhip, his home turf and Tuipui South seats.
