Hmar Autonomous District Council promised by BJP angers CYMA

SIAHA - Central Young Mizo Association (C-YMA) has expressed its concern and dismay over the promise allegedly made by BJP President Rajnath Singh on the creation of ‘Hmar Autonomous District Council (HADC)’ for Hmar ethnic minorities in Mizoram.

According to Vanglaini.org, the National President of BJP has made this promise while speaking at Sakawrdai (town/village), Mizoram on November 15 during his recent visit to the state.

CYMA stated that an election should not be used for dividing and spreading harmony and integration among the people.

Supporting CYMA’s stand on this, Mizo Students’ Union (MSU) too has strongly condemned the promise made by BJP National President.

The details can be found at Vanglaini.org in Mizo, click

Currently, there are three Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) - one each for Chakmas, Maras (earlier known as Lakhers) and Lais (earlier known as Pawis) in Saiha and Lawngtlai districts in Southern most part of Mizoram state. According to 2001 cencus, the three ADCs population is 128,976 out of 839,310 the total Mizoram population, making up 15.36% of the state’s population.

Unlike the three ADCs in South Mizoram, Hmars who are the main inhabitants of the Northeastern part of Mizoram do not live in a clearly demarcated area, but are scatterred among other Mizo tribes. Hmars have Sinlung Hill Development Council for now.
