IMPHAL, Dec 20: While expressing solidarity to suffering of the common peo- ple who are ensnared in the insurgency problem afflicting the state, Inspector Ge- neral of Assam Rifles (south) Maj Gen AK Chou-dhury cautioned armed groups who are party to the suspension of operation pact that violation of laid down norms would entail appropriate action from security forces.
Speaking to mediaper-sons at the Mantripukhri military facility of the As-sam Rifles (South) today, the Major General said cadres of the UG groups that violate the SoO ground rules would be dealt with seriously.
He also conveyed that level of violence in the hills particularly at Kuki dominated areas has come down to a significant level after the signing of the SoO between the Government and armed organisations belonging to the Kuki-Chin-Mizo group.
The officer also confirm-ed a faction of the Kanglei- pak Communist party’s Military Council led by one Lalumba alias Hitendra agreeing to sit across the negotiation table, which he described is a good sign of preparedness of UG groups to return to mainstream.
Pointing out that presence of armed elements is the crux of the problem besieging people of the State whose aspiration to enjoy fruits of development are being deprived for the past many years, AK Choudhury also called upon the masses to extend maximum cooperation so as to ensure implementation and acceleration of development works. conceding that the troops are facing difficulties in combating insurgents as the ‘cadres are our brothers’, he also affirmed that the soldiers are carrying out their tasks in the most professional manner and urged the media to point out any mistake committed by any security personnel as corrective measures and actions could be initiated accordingly. The major General also observed that due to continued indulgence of armed cadres in criminal acts such as rampant killing, extortion and abductions the people unwilling to cow down to diktats of these elements have steadily begun to openly demonstrate their defiance and anger.
