Christmas alert in Shillong

- Arrested rebel confesses plan to attack Tura public places. Shillong, Dec. 21: Meghalaya police have issued a Christmas alert in the state fearing untoward incidents during the festive season.

The police have set up control rooms and taken adequate security measures to thwart any evil design.

Chief secretary Ranjan Chatterjee said with a large number of people flocking to Shillong during this festive season, there is a reason to have a security alert in the state capital.

The police have been asked to identify vulnerable areas in parts of Shillong for the smooth celebrations of the festival.

Moreover, the presence of many militant outfits of the Northeast in Garo Hills has made these areas vulnerable and the police are gearing up to thwart any possible attack by the militants, particularly in Tura town.

This comes after an arrested rebel of the Peoples’ Liberation Front of Meghalaya (PLFM) on Friday confessed that the militant group along with the Liberation of Achik Elite Force (LAEF) and Tripura-based All Tripura Tiger Force plan to carry out attacks in Tura prior to Christmas and New Year celebrations.

According to government spokesman Conrad Sangma, the police and intelligence agencies have unearthed the plan of these militant groups to unleash terror at public places in Tura.

The state government officials, however, have downplayed the reports and said the two outfits do not have much strength to carry out attacks.

“However, we are not taking the matter lightly,” a senior police official said.

The deputy commissioner of West Garo Hills, Frederick Roy Kharkongor, said the alert issued in Tura is of “general nature” in the wake of Mumbai terror attacks and blasts in Guwahati.

The police held a high-level meeting today in Shillong to discuss the specific reports of possible attacks at public places in Tura.

A security cordon has been placed in and around Tura and other public areas in West Garo Hills, a police official said, adding that the CRPF has also been deployed in certain areas.

Kharkongor said the government would make all the necessary security arrangements to ensure that there is a peaceful celebration of Christmas and New Year in Tura.
