Guwahati: Assam will soon have four specialised schools in anti-terrorism and counter insurgency. Director of the Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPRD) K Koshy said this in Guwahati on Sunday. The four schools are among 20 such institutions to be set up across the country to deal with the menace of terrorism.
"While four schools were sanctioned for Assam, the rest of the schools would be set up in Naxal-affected areas of the country and in Jammu and Kashmir," said Koshy.
The schools in Assam would be set up in different locations in consultation with the Assam Police.
Koshy said that the four schools would be set up in different locations in Assam and that these schools would be established in the lines with the Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare (CIJW) School at Vairangte in Mizoram.
"The central government would sanction some amount for setting up of the school and the central government would also appoint specialized trainers in those schools," Koshey said while adding that the trainers would be mainly from the Army and CRPF. The CIJW School is being run by the CRPF at present.
"The basic intention of these schools would be to focus on the counter terrorism and to formulate strategies and tactics to deal with situation during any probable terrorist attacks," he added.
Assam Director General of Police GM Srivastav was also present on the occasion. (NNN)

ULFA planning attacks ahead of R-Day
Guwahati: Police have intensified operations against ULFA following intelligence reports that the banned outfit has smuggled consignments of arms and ammunitions into Assam to create "disturbances" in the run-up to the Republic Day, a top police official said on Sunday.
"We have information of more consignments of explosives, arms and ammunitions which ULFA plans to use to create disturbances in the run up to the January 26 celebrations," Director General of Police G M Srivastava said here.
"Police have intensified operations against the ULFA," he said.
Referring to huge quantities of arms and ammunitions recently seized from upper Assam's Tinsukia district, the DGP said they had been procured by ULFA's 28th battalion and did not belong to the battalion's 'A' and 'C' company whose cadres are currently on an unilateral ceasefire.
Most of the weapons were of Chinese make but a probe is on to determine the route taken for movement of the weapons, he said.
Police said the weapons were meant for new cadres who, they suspect, are being currently trained outside the country.
"The weapons usually handed over at the place of operations as it is difficult for cadres to move with them due to stepped up security operations," Srivastava said. PT
Srivastava said police has stepped up security measures in the run-up to the Republic Day with 'Railway Suraksha Samitis' being set up in 147 railway stations in the state.
DIG (CID) will head the security system and senior police officials will be put on duty at key railway stations, he said.
An additional nine hundred CRPF personnel will be deployed, taking the force's strength in the state to 31 companies.
Asked whether army will be deployed in Guwahati or other key towns, the DGP said, "as of now there is no such move but they are functioning under unified command structure and will continue to do so."
"Our aim is to optimise and maximise the available forces to meet the increased security threat in the run up to the January 26 celebrations," he said.
He further appealed to people to be more vigilant and look around themselves any unusual or suspicious happening which they should immediately report to the police. (PTI)
