Manipur Statehood day celebrated sans public participation

IMPHAL, Jan 21: Manipur today celebrated its 37th Statehood Day in a function bereft of public attendance in comparison to celebrations in previous years at the parade ground of Ist MR here. Speaking as chief guest of the function, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh admitted that Manipur has been caught in the quagmire of under deve-lopment even after 37 years of attaining Statehood and sought the co-operation and support of the people in the efforts being made by the Govt to make the State fully developed by 2020.

He said that even though Manipur became a full-fledged State 37 years back, there are still a lot of developmental works that need to be accomplished. The Government has been putting its best efforts to make the State fully developed by 2020 and the co-operation and support of the people in this regard is essential, he said.

Maintaining that all the existing problems can be resolved peacefully through democratic means, the Chief Minister also reiterated his appeal to the armed UG groups to opt for peace talks like the Kuki and Naga outfits in the hills.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Ph Parijat presided over the function which was also attended by other Cabinet Ministers, the Speaker and top Government officials. In his address, Ph Parijat observed that the attainment of Statehood of Manipur on January 21, 1972 did not come that easily and people as a whole worked hard and sacrificed a lot to achieve this.

He also admitted that the developmental activities taking place in Manipur over the last 37 years since attaining Statehood is not enough in comparison to other States of the country.
Seeking the co-operation of the people to the developmental works being taken up by the Government, Parijat said that without the co-operation of the people, the Government alone cannot accomplish anything.

The Statehood day celebration started off with the rendering of devotional songs by various communities including Hindu, Sanamahi, Christian, Muslim, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist. The 37th Statehood day of Manipur was also celebrated under the aegis of Left Co-ordination Committee, Ma- nipur at Irabot Bhavan here today.

The function was also attended by Chairman of CPI Control Commission Moi-rangthem Ibohal, Secretariat member of CPI (M) Meitram Samu, ex-MP W Kullabidhu of Janta Dal (S), secretary of CPI Manipur State Unit Langol Iboyaima, secretary of CPI (M) Sarat Salam and Secretariat member of CPI B Sharma as presidium members.

Speaking at the occasion, Moirangthem Ibohal observed that people of Manipur have not been able to enjoy the attainment of Statehood even after 37 years as they have been deprived of the right which is ‘people are the master in a democratic Government’. Moreover the problems of the large teeming population of poor farmers have been able solved till date, he added. The administration of the Government of India has also not been able to look at its people equally, he alleged.

Ex-MP W Kullabidhu asserted that even after 37 years of attainment of Statehood, there has been no change in the socio-economic condition of the people. At the outset of the function, tributes were paid to all those leaders who took part in the agitation for attainment of Statehood.
