Zoramthanga for probe into priest’s death

AIZAWL, Jan 20 – The Lal Thanhawla Government in Mizoram was today urged by former Chief Minister Zoram-thanga to conduct thorough investigation into the mysterious death of Rev Chanchinmawia of the Presbyterian Church.

Addressing his first press conference here after being dislodged from power in the last Assembly polls, Zoram-thanga said his government had ordered a CBI probe into the case after the people expressed dissatisfaction over the reports submitted by the special investigation team of the State police.

“If the government is still not satisfied with the findings of the CBI after the premier investigative agency submits its report, it can constitute another special investigation team or ask for investigations by Scotland Yard to find out the truth behind the priest’s death,” he said.

He said that legal notice was served to the Editor of a local vernacular daily for publishing defamatory stories against the former government and his Mizo National Front party.

The newspaper alleged that the pastor did not commit suicide and his death was a homicidal one in which three former Ministers were involved and Rs 770 lakh from the account of the State Rural Development department was used to pay the assassins. Rev Chanchinmawia’s body was found in a pool of blood at his official pastor’s residence at Khatla locality here on October 1, 2007 and the SIT which investigated the case concluded that it was a suicidal death as the pastor was having depression.

The case, however, was handed over to the CBI during the last part of last year after the Presbyterian Church and many people could not believe the findings of the investigators. – PTI
