Gospel Centenary | Celebrating Hundred Years of Glorious Transformation!

The entrance of the Gospel of Jesus Christ among the people of Southern Manipur, India will be a hundred years by 2010! The region has been occupied by very fierce groups of tribes who knew nothing except to wage war and fight among themselves, yet considered to be one of the most responsive people groups to the Gospel of Jesus Christ!

Thanks to the Welsh Revival in 1906 that changed the life of a young man by the name of Watkin Roberts who became instrumental in the hands of God Almighty to bring the light of the Gospel to these people. Under his initiative three missionaries among his raw converts from the neighboring state of Mizoram namely, Savawma, Thangchhingpuia and Vanzika came to Senvawn, a village in the southern tip of Manipur state bordering the state of Mizoram on May 7, 1910 thus ushering in the age of the Gospel among the tribal groups.

Within a few years a Mission was founded which is called North East India General Mission (NEIGM) which vigorously began taking up the task of propagating the Gospel among these fierce tribal groups and also in the north east region of India. Today the region of Southern Manipur has one of the highest concentrations of Christians in the whole of India.

Many churches and denominations have sprung up over the years, but all claiming their roots from the North East India General Mission. The North East India General Mission merged with the Evangelical Congregational Church of USA in 1986 and came to be known as the Evangelical Congregational Church of India.

A meeting of various denominational leaders under the initiative of Evangelical Congregational Church of India, was held on March 25, 2006. Most of the churches and denominations of the region were represented in the meeting and a committee was formed to spearhead the preparations for the grand celebration of Gospel Centenary in 2010.

The Organizing Committee welcomes every form of assistance and suggestions to make this celebration a success. For further information and suggestions please contact:

Nature of the Program

The Celebration Program will begin from the evening of May 5 and end in the evening of May 7, 2010. Public Worship programs will be held in the evenings and in the mornings. Workshops and Seminars will be conducted in the afternoons by prominent Christian leaders. Detail information will be made available later. Rev. Dr. Geoff Tunnicliffe, International Director, World Evangelical Alliance has kindly accepted our invitation to be the main Speaker.

The goal of the program is two-fold; to celebrate the life-changing power of the Gospel and to prepare the Church for the challenges ahead. A comparison of the lives of the people between the Pre-Christian Era and the Post-Christian Era in itself is a testimony to the life changing power of the Gospel. It does deserve a celebration! Secondly having been Christians for the last hundred years, what challenges does the Church in Southern Manipur confronts in this 21st century and how will it face these challenges?

Erection of Monuments: To commemorate this auspicious event, the following monuments will be erected for the future generation:

1. Centenary Gate across the road somewhere along the National Highway.
2. Centenary monuments in the heart of the town and at Senvon Village where the Gospel was first preached in the region.
3. Publish a colourful Souvenir Magazine containing vital documents pertaining to the growth and development of the Church.

  1. Let us return to the Lord. Back to the Bible. We are about to celebrate 100 years of our Christianity. Go's will, it will be in May of this year. But, I have a very big questions to raise for all of us. Do we deserve to be called a true Christian? Let us look back our past years. We fight each other, killed each others, hate each other. Does the Bible whcih is the most Holy Bible taught us to be all these bad things? No at all. Let us all back to the bible.
