BJP to contest 13 out of total 26 seats in NE

BJP has announced that it would go for direct fight in 13 sets of the total 26 Lok Sabha seats of Northeastern states in the upcoming general election and the party would support like-minded regional parties for the rest of the seats. Talking to mediapersons here yesterday, BJP's Northeast election in-charge P Chandrasekhar Rao alleged that the Congress and Left parties had failed to restore peace and normalcy in the region.

''The security along Indo-Bangladesh border is very poor, which helps the anti-India forces to import arms,'' he said.

''The loaded trucks entering India from Bangladesh through Northeastern sates and West Bengal are not being checked properly, and as a result, the entire stretch of the border has become a safe passage for terrorists and arms smugglers,'' he said.

''We have already demanded an exclusive security council for northeastern states following the model of National Security Council for the sake of peace in the region but the Centre has not yet responded to it,'' he said. Border issues, insurgency, infiltration and development would be the core issues in the general elections in Northeast, Rao said, adding the rate of development in Left-ruled Tripura and West Bengal was ''very poor because of rampant corruption and misrule''.

''The position of Tripura in the Indian Development Index is 27th which is almost at the bottom, just above newly created states Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh and Union Territory Puducherry.
Similarly, West Bengal ranks 18, whereas it stood first just after Independence,'' Rao pointed out.
