Mizos celebrate ''Chapchar Kut''

Chapchar Kut was celebrated all over Mizoram today with traditional enthusiasm and gaiety. In the main function held at Lammual in Aizawl, the Kut Father, Chief Minister, Mr. Lal Thanhawla expressed gratitude to the people and all non-governmental organizations for organizing Chapchar Kut in harmony with Mizo culture and the changing belief of the people. He also said that celebration of the Kut changes along with the stage of development and the earlier way of celebration which has been abandoned now was not to be condemned totally as it represented the traditional way of celebration.

Greeting all the participants and visitors including those who came from the neighbouring states and abroad he reminded them that the true way of life is to be truthful and honest wherever we are. Earlier addressing the mammoth gathering, Art and Culture Minister, Mr. PC Zoram Sangliana, who also was the host of the Kut said, celebration of Chapchar Kut was discontinued from 1960 till 1972 because of conflicting opinion among the Church, voluntary organizations and the government. He however thanked the people for reviving the Kut in harmony with Christian belief and abolishing irrelevant and objectionable ingredients used in the past. He also said that culture cannot develop and thrive without congenial peaceful condition. He praised the Chief Minister for sacrificing his Chief Ministership in 1986 to accommodate the MNF leaders which brought lasting peace in Mizoram.

Leader of Baptist Church, Rev. H. Lianngaia who led the people in devotion reminded them that they are to face judgement day on the basis of their activities while they are living in this world. The Central YMA President Mr. JH Zoremthanga welcomed the participants and the visitors coming from far and near. Addressing the gathering, the Tourism Minister, Mr. S. Hiato underlined the need to make Mizoram attractive for tourists. He also said that hospitality, honesty and cultural heritage of Mizos will play crucial role to this direction. The Kut was marked by wide ranging display of Mizo culture from dances, songs and performances connected with their past beliefs. Costume parade, depicting social changes from 17th Century to the present day and some traditional games were also displayed in the function. The Kut concluded this afternoon with ‘Chhawnghnawh’ which means feeding of friends and dear ones with the most delicious food available. Chapchar Kut was also celebrated in the District Hqrs. towns. In Champhai, it was celebrated at Kahrawt field with cultural dances, songs and traditional games and the President of Mizo Academy of Letters, Mr. Lalthangfala Sailo was the Kut father. Not only the cultural clubs and YMA members of the town but also from a number of villages within the districts participated in the Kut. In Kolasib, the function was held at Tuipui field where the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Dawngliana was the Kut father. The function included cultural dances, singing of songs and traditional games. In Mamit, the Kut celebration was marked by display of wide ranging variety of culture including that of the Bru and Chakma. In Lunglei, the Kut was celebrated at LDSC Ground Number One and the Deupty Commissioner, Ms. M. Zohmingthangi acted as the host. The display of cultural dances and songs included Bhangra performed by the 40th Assam Rifles and Indian dances by Gurkha youth. In Saiha, Voluntary Organizations including, MTP, YMA, YLA, MCHP, MHIP and Lai Women Association participated in the festival. Wide variety of cultural dances of different tribes living in the area were displayed for public entertainment. Chapchar Kut was not however celebrated in Lawngtlai and Serchhip District Hqrs.

Chapchar Kut Fest at Vanapa hall attracted a large number of visitors today and the visitors included Ministers and officials of the government. The display included fine arts, dresses and apparels of former Mizo heroes and scripts written by them.

In a Mizo traditional way, voluntary social work was organized in Puilo village to reconstruct six houses which were completely devastated by fire yesterday afternoon. The people collected building materials from the jungle today and they are to start the construction work tomorrow. Meanwhile volunteers of Kawlkulh village collected donations and building materials for assistance to the fire victims families of Puilo village and they are to proceed to Puilo village tomorrow with whatever they collected today. As already stated, six houses including Anganwadi centre in Puilo village were gutted by fire yesterday afternoon.

Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) has decided to be a silent spectator of the forth coming Lok Sabha and Assembly bye elections in South Tuipui constituency. This decision was taken by the Party High Command which met in the Party office today under the chairmanship of the Party President, Mr. Lalduhoma. In reply to ZONET Corr. the Party Vice President, Mr. C. Vulluaia said, the coming Lok Sabha election for the lone seat in Mizoram and Assembly bye election in South Tuipui constituency are not considered to have meaningful impact on the people of the state and the ZNP which has been trying to introduce meaningful change in the administration will rather concentrate on strengthening of the Party. He also said that the Party will neither extend support to any other Party nor field a candidate and the Party members are free to exercise their franchise as they like.

Three persons were injured when a Truck proceeding to Aizawl from Saiha met accident near Tlungvel quarry this morning. The Truck ran out of the road and rolled down about 200 feet below. Luckily the Truck got stuck on the steep slope and three persons in the vehicle were found alive by Tlungvel YMA volunteers who rushed to the spot for rescue operation. The Assam Rifle officer stationed in Serchhip Captain Dig Vijay also sent the Assam Rifle jawans for the rescue operation and lifted all the injured persons to Thingsulthliah hospital. Talking to news persons, Tlungvel Branch YMA Secretary, Mr. Zosangliana described the service rendered to the needy persons by the Assam Rifles as exemplary.

National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) has started resurfacing of Aizawl city road on war footing. Work is going on in 6 selected roads every night from 9 pm till 5 in the next day morning by blocking the roads. Meanwhile the Traffic Police requested the drivers not to ply in these roads which are Sikulpuikawn to BSNL Office, Tennis Court to Silkulpuikawn via Khatla, Sikulpuikawn to Kulikawn, Electric veng to Israel Point, Temple Square to Vaivakawn and Bawngkawn to College Veng via Sarawn veng.

In view of the coming Parliamentary elections Aizawl District Magistrate prohibited carrying and use of arms and explosive without valid permit issued by him. This prohibitory order issued under section 144 of Cr. PC is to remain valid till the 17th April. In another order, the District Magistrate also banned un-authorized sale of petrol, diesel oil and kerosene oil. In a prohibitory order issued under Section 144 of Cr. PC, the District Magistrate said that this is necessary for public safety.

In the 32nd Robula Chess Trophy which was concluded today, Zohmingliana of Mission Veng lifted the trophy and a cash price of 10 thousand rupees, The runner up Lalrinfela of Bethlehem Veng also lifted the trophy and a cash price of 7 thousand rupees. The prizes were distributed at a function in Electric Veng YMA Hall.
