Addressing a mammoth gathering that converged at Clock Tower junction after marching through the city from Essar petrol pump, Super market via New Flyover, against rapes and violence against women, the Naga Women Hoho Dimapur (NWHD) called upon the people and the state government to make Nagaland free from rapes and all kinds of violence against women.
Organised by the NWHD under the theme, “Violation against women’s right is violation of fundamental Human rights Principle,” the rally was attended by people from all walks of life even as people were seen joining the rally mid way while the shops remained closed during the rally.
NWHD president, Hukheli T. Wotsa who chaired the programme strongly urged upon all concerned to strive to make Nagaland a free state from all kinds of violence against women.
Rallyists carried placards that read “Swift justice is our demand,” “Liberal penalty for criminals is breeding crimes,” “Rape is devil’s masterpiece,” etc.
Chairperson of the Nagaland State Women Commission (NSWC) Sano Vamuzo expressed unhappiness over the government for ignoring the Naga women on the Domestic Violence Act, 2005. She also enlightened the gathering about the various laws that have been made to protect the rights of the women.
Naga Mother’s Association (NMA) Khesheli Z. Chishi thanked the Police and the NSCN (I-M) for apprehending the culprits of March 25 incident at Darogapathar, Dimapur.
The Ao Watsu Mundang, president requested the authorities to award capital punishment to the accused.
Others who spoke during the rally included, expert member National Commission for Women Rosemary Dzuvichii, presidents of the Naga Council, Ao Senso Union, GBs and DBs, NPMHR, NSF and DNSU.
The women leaders also informed the gathering of the four resolutions adopted by the NSWC against rapes and violence against women.
“The culprits in many cases get bail and get away,” said a student of Holy Cross Higher Secondary School. She was expressing disappointment over the many past instances where the culprits normally go scot-free while her friends said that such violent incidents should not happen again. Some of the boys said they were rallying to help stop violence against women in the society.
Prior to the start of the rally at Super Market, the invocation was pronounced by President, BWF Asangla Jamir.
General secretary of the NWHD, Liangsi Niumai Jhon read out the memorandum at the Clock Tower junction and Yanpolumi, vice- president, NWHD delivered the vote of thanks.
Rev. Lolly Kape, BPF pronounced the invocation at the City Tower while Parish priest of Holy Cross Church, Fr. Chacko offered the benediction.
A memorandum was later forwarded to the Governor and Chief Minister through the DC, Dimapur. Maongwati, DC, Dimapur who assured the NWHD to submit the memorandum to the Chief Minister today itself.
