Lamka, May 1: The state health and family welfare commissioner Vumlunmang Vualnam, IAS, paid a visit to the 100-bedded Churachandpur District Hospital today morning and made detail enquiries on the condition of the hospital. He visited all the wards and units apart from checking the progress of the building constructions going on in the premises.
He was accompanied by health and family welfare director Dr. W Motilal, additional director Dr. Pratab Chandra from Imphal and all district hospital officials including medical superintendent Dr. T Hatzaw, CMO Dr. H Singkhozam, Deputy MS Dr. N Tualkhankham besides doctors-in-charge of wards and units.
On reaching the district hospital, the commissioner went straight to the proposed site for the construction of incenerator building. Thereafter, he went to see the hospital’s morgue and its condition during the course of which he gave a patient hearing to the hospital officials and staffs on the need for construction of new mortuary along with waiting shed and the problems of the ANM hostel for girls where there is lack of staff including warden.
The commissioner then oversaw the ongoing construction of one ward building which is an extension of another ward and was visibly dis-satisfied with the progress and quality of construction. He was seen chiding the contractor concerned for the tardy progress and said, “Its high time you (contractor) complete at least 50 percent of the work.” He further directed the contractor to make necessary improvements within one weeks time, failing which he could be taken to task.
He further went to see the condition of the children’s ward, maternity ward, surgical ward, medicine ward and the operation theatre including the newly constructed staff quarters.
The commissioner was visibly concerned with the sanitation at the hospital and said attempts would be made to repair the children’s ward and in the near future depending on availability of funds.
He gave assurance on provision of 60 beds and mattresses altogether for the children’s ward, maternity ward and medicine ward so that each of the three wards get those beds and mattresses according to their requisite numbers.
The commissioner was apprised of the acute shortage of water which in turn led to the prevalence of unhygienic sanitation which made the hospital itself a health hazard.
The most challenging problem faced by the hospital is scarcity of water and for that matter proper sanitation was difficult to maintain, which is why the commissioner was also highly concerned with this problem. The diesel generator is worth Rs. 21 lakhs and consumes about 10 to 15 litres per hour.
Later, he enquired on the condition of the District Hospital’s Blood Bank which remains unused since the last many years.
The commissioner also enquired on the newly installed sound grip power generator for the hospital and made a trial run just to make sure as to whether it could really solve the power crises faced by the hospital due to which most of the sophisticated hospital equipments installed are lying unused.
On completing his enquiries at all the wards and units, Vumlunmang Vualnam attended his maiden press conference since becoming a commissioner, with the Churachandpur pressmen.
During his interaction with the pressmen, issues ranging from acute water shortage at the hospital, the existence of Rs. 100 per day paid ward, the absence of life saving drugs and other medicines and non-medicine items like cotton and IV fluids besides others which could be used in urgent matters, the superintendents bid to open a pharmacy at the first floor of the OPD building, to the unsanitary conditions at the hospital due to acute water shortage were taken up.
