Fake currency seized, Tripura to seek Mizoram help

AGARTALA, May 3 – Tripura police have seized Indian fake currencies worth Rs 34,500 from two villagers of North Tripura’s Kanchanpur subdivision. Banka Nath of Dain Cherra under Kanchanpur police station sold his two heads of cattle to Pritimoy Chakma of Khantalang in Mizoram at Dasda cattle market at a cost of Rs 25,000 on Saturday.

Later, it was found that the sale proceeds amounting to Rs 25,000 are fake Indian notes. He brought the matter to the market committee and lodged a complaint with the police.

The same day, one Ranjit Nath sold his cattle to Nihar Chakma of Khantalang in Mizoram at a cost of Rs 9,500, which was also paid with fake Indian notes.

The OC of the police station registered a case and seized all the fake notes. Police have already initiated investigation but no arrest was made so far. Sources claimed, both the accused persons have crossed over Tripura-Mizoram border immediately after the transactions. Police authorities here are contemplating to seek help from Mizoram police to trace out the criminals, sources said.

The CID, which has been investigating several such cases, will be entrusted with the case.

It may be noted that earlier also, fake notes were circulated in different markets of North and Dhalai district from neighbouring Mizoram.

A number of rackets involving citizens of India, Bangladesh and Myanmar are active in circulating fake Indian currencies in the Northeastern region, sources said.

Assam Rifles in joint raids with the Mizoram police had seized fake currency worth Rs 1 million and arrested several people including a local bank manager and Myanmarese citizens in Mizoram last year.

The police have also recovered some documents and important information of the Central Bank of Bangladesh in the raid, a top police official here said.
