SILCHAR, May 3 – Mizoram Police with the help of some local persons of Mizoram captured land and set up two offices of Mizoram Government at Lailapur, a border area of Mizoram and Assam. This area comes under the Dholai constituency and is 45 kilometres away from the city.
The local residents of the area said despite several reminders to the Lailapur Police Station, the administration has not taken any steps in this regard. The administration has proved a total failure sources said.
Sources said that the Mizos were building huts on Assam land, backed by their police. This has created much tension along the Assam-Mizoram border. At least 200 people from Lailapur, Canoghat, Frenchnagar areas of Cachar had gathered at Lailapur forest beat office to evict the Mizos from their land, but the forest officials failed to help them.
The local people have alleged that the attitude of the administration in this regard is very irksome. They said that Mizos have already captured huge tracts of land that belong to Assam. The local people further said that the Mizo people have been constructing houses and destroying the forest on the Assam side of the border.
A local source of Lailapur informed that these are very regular features. Every year such incidents take place. In 2006, a magistrate of Mizoram Government clamped Section 144 under Cr PC to remove the autorickshaw stand from Bhagabazar under Dholai and in 2007 Mizo Zyghai Pawl, a student organisation erected their room on land belonging to Assam with the support of Mizoram Police. However, police from both the neighbouring states dismantled the office room.
Parimal Suklabaidya, MLA of Dholai constituency said that this factor has become a regular phenomenon only in the last few years. Mizo people are supported by the Mizoram police for capturing land in Assam. He has placed the issue several times before the authorities, but the district administration has not taken serious steps in this regard.
Suklabaidya suspected that there might be involvement of some forest officials as the place is noted for smuggling of wood and other forest items. Mizo people are regularly destroying forest produce.
Briefing newsmen Cachar DC Gautam Ganguli, said that the DFO, and the SP have been asked to settle the matter. He has spoken to the DC, Kolashib and talked about securing an order from the Gauhati High Court to settle the matters.
