New Delhi: Girl students from the Northeast studying in the national capital will soon be able to avail accommodation in the 500-seat hostel being set up here by the government.
Officials in the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region said fund for the hostel has been already released and it would be ready for accommodation in couple of months time.
A hostel for girl students has been a long-standing demand of the students from the region as girls from the North East often complain about discrimination allegedly meted out to them in private hostels and rented houses in the capital.
The DoNER Ministry officials said RITES, the engineering, consultancy and project management services enterprise, is involved in the project.
"It will be modern and well furnished hostel for the girl students of the region. It is a very good step. We often face discrimination and harassment in the city because of our appearance. I hope the girls who come to Delhi for higher studies will feel comfortable staying at the hostel," said Riti, a girl from Assam who had just finished her MBA from a renowned private college in the capital.
The demand for a dedicated girls hostel for students of the region grew louder following several incidents of alleged rape and sexual harassment against girl students from the North East.
In the wake of rising cases of sexual abuses, human rights activists, social workers, students from the region had started a helpline last year to help students and youths from the region.
The official said the hostel would be having facilities like rainwater harvesting and solar water heating. (PTI)
