Fuel shortage hits State, trucks arrive

IMPHAL, Nov 12: With the stock of fuel in the oil depot of the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) at Chingmeirong fast depleting, the State Government has imposed restriction on issuing petrol from oil pumps in jerrycans.

According to an official of the IOC, as the oil tankers have not been able to transport and bring fuel to Imphal following imposition of economic blockade along the National Highway 39, the existing stock of fuel in the oil depot has depleted considerably. At present, there are 990 Kl of petrol which would last only for 12 days.

As for the current stock figure of 2787 KL of diesel and 1751 KL of kerosene, it would last for 17 and 19 days respectively, the official said, while informing that 80 KL of petrol had been issued to 16 oil pumps today besides issuing diesel to 19 oil pumps.

Meanwhile, in view of the depleting stock of petroleum products in the State, the FCS Department has given instructions to the Police and the district administrations to ban issuing petrol and diesel from oil pumps in jerrycans.

Police sources, however, informed that Imphal-bound goods laden trucks that were stranded at Mao Gate consequent to the economic blockade have been allowed to cross the area following an understanding.

Altogether 122 goods laden trucks stranded at Mao Gate and Khuzama in Nagaland because of the economic blockade being imposed by SDSA along NH 39 crossed Mao Gate this afternoon amidst security escorts, informed a police source.

The Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA) called the indefinite economic blockade since November 1 in protest against the failure of the State Government to repair the highway despite its most pitiable condition.

Meanwhile, a press release issued by SDSA in- formed that 120 trucks stranded at Mao Gate have been given ‘goodwill passage’ at about 1 pm today.

After discussing suffering of the people and ac- knowledging cooperation and support of transporters to its cause, SDSA decided to offer any relaxation of the economic blockade today, it said.

Yet, the student body maintained that the economic blockade will continue until the Government respond positively and the highway repairing work taken up by the Government is found satisfactory to the general public.
