Aizawl, Nov 10: New and young candidates have been challenging three chief ministerial candidates in Mizoram assembly polls. Polls to the 40-member assembly would be held on December 02. Chief Minister Zoramthanga is pitted against United Democratic Alliance's H Lalhmingthangi, a 32-year-old theologian, who recently resigned as Secretary of Presbyterian Women Fellowship (North East) in Champhai South constituency in Mizoram-Myanmar border.
Another young man who fielded nomination as Independent candidate against Zoramthanga in Champhai North seat is a former student leader Lalhmachhuana Zofa.
Three-time Chief Minister and state PCC chief Lal Thanhawla is also facing challenge from R Lalhnuna of ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), General Secretary of MNF and a first time contestant.
Another youth, Lalruatkima, is pitted against UDA's Chief Ministerial candidate, former Chief Minister and Mizoram People's Conference (MPC) chief Brigadier Thenphunga Sailo in Aizawl West-II seat.
Lalruatkima, a social worker has recently resigned as General Secretary of the central committee of Young Mizo Association (YMA), the apex body of Mizos.
The assembly polls would witness young and first-timers contesting on ruling MNF ticket as the party which ruled the state for two consecutive terms has been facing strong anti-incumbency wave.
For the first time, all the major political parties are putting women candidates as women's organisations have been demanding representation of women in the state legislature.
The MNF fielded Lalhlimpuii, former and lone woman minister as its candidate in Hrangturzo constituency on Mizoram-Myanmar border. Congress has also nominated a woman Zothankimi as its candidate in Aizawl West-II seat.
UDA's candidate H Lalhmingthangi is a first-timer and the most popular woman candidate so far even as BJP and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) were fielding two and one women candidate respectively.
A lone woman independent candidate C Laldinkimi, a well-known gospel singer is also contesting from East Tuipui seat.
