Five school principals in police custody for abstaining R-Day celebration

Imphal: Manipur Cabinet on Wednesday took a tough stand against five principals and the students of higher secondary schools located in Imphal for failing to participate in the 60th Republic Day celebration on January 26. As a penalty for abstaining from the Republic Day celebration in Imphal, the State Cabinet has "decided not to issue admit cards" to the students who are to appear in the Class XII examamination to be conducted by the State Education Council in February-March.

According to a Cabinet minister, the Cabinet has minutely discussed the matter and decided to take appropriate legal action against the five principals.

Apart from cancelling enrollment for the said students, the minister also informed that admit cards for the twelve standard students of the concerned schools will not be issued and added that promotion will be cancelled for the students appearing the promotion examination.

Meanwhile, police sources informed that the principals who were taken under custody by the police on Tuesday have been remanded under police custody on Wednesday for three days for further interrogation after producing them at the district magistrate court of Imphal.

The sources further said that an FIR under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act has been registered against the said principals at the Imphal police station.

The five principals have been registered under FIR No 28 (1) 09 IPC under section 124-A/341/501, 120-B IPC and 18/39 (2) UAP (Unlawful Activities Prevention) Amendment Act, 2004.

Apparently, the schools had been threatened by militant outfits of dire consequences if they participate in the Republic Day celebration.

The Cabinet meeting on Wednesday also discussed many other agenda, informed the minister and revealed that the Special Police Officer (SPO) has been converted into Village Defence Force (VDF).

Further, the Cabinet also approved to recruit another 10,350 SPOs with monthly salary of Rs 3000 and attach about 30 persons each in about 45 police stations.

Regarding the Siroy stand-off between the security forces personnel and the NSCN(IM), the minister informed that as per the instructions of the State Government, the Director General of Police (DGP) has submitted his reports regarding the incident and added that as per the reports the area will be cleared after two to three days time.

Until the situation is controlled, the Cabinet will conduct a review meeting after every two to three days, further conveyed the minister.

The minister also informed that the State boxer MC Mary Kom and L Sarita will be promoted to DSP from their respective inspector posts for their feat of achieving gold and silver medals respectively in the recently concluded 5th Asian Women Boxing Championship. (NNN)
