Nagaland asks schools to adopt two-sport discipline

KOHIMA: Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio said all schools in the state should adopt at least two sports disciplines of their choice to tap talents at a tender age. Speaking at a function here to felicitate sportspersons who brought laurels to Nagaland, Rio said state government had encouraged sports associations to appoint professional coaches to train young people in various disciplines.

He pointed out that Nagaland, which participated in the National Games for the first time at Guwahati in 2007 after the formation of the Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA), won 11 medals, including a gold.

Referring to a small country like Cameroon which attracted world attention through football, Rio said, "After seeing Olympics in Sydney and Beijing, football World Cups and other international sports events my experience is that sports is the only route through which Nagaland can shot into prominence in the world stage."
