Kolkata: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Shillong, is all set to come up with a "collaborative innovation centre" by May, in a bid to inspire ideas for a wholesome social development. Speaking on the sidelines of a conference and exhibition 'Infocom 08-09' here on Saturday, IIM (Shillong) Director Ashok Dutta said the centre would aim at promoting innovative ideas to solve the problems that emanate out of poverty and resource constraints.
"The initiative, first-of-its-kind by an IIM, will be unlike an incubation centre set by a firm for promoting its business. It will develop ideas for tackling social problems, rather than being an isolated island of excellence. You cannot talk of development while you are surrounded by 800 million poverty-striken people," Mr Dutta explained.
Not only students, but also people from all walks of life would participate in the drive, he said, adding the centre would be sponsored by a think tank or NGO. The IIM would act as a facilitator in this regard, he informed. (UNI)
