Dimapur : Sparsha, a youth counseling centre in Mangalore along with Master of Social Work students from Mangalore University and various colleges have taken initiatives in launching a forum for North East students in Mangalore. North East Students’ Team (NEST) was formed with the idea of bringing students from the North East together and to make them feel at home and also help local people to know more about the seven sister states.
A North East day was observed on January 25, 2009 at Kalaangann, the Konkani cultural heritage centre, Mangalore. The day was marked with cultural events and a work-shop on the topic “Team Work in Success”. About 150 students studying in various colleges participated in the event.
The S.P. Excise Department, Intelligence & Enforcement George Pinto inaugurated the event by lighting the lamp. Eminent Konkani Activist Eric Ozario and Sparsha’s Denis D’Silva and Roshan Castelino also graced the occasion.
while addressing the students Castelino dwelt on the genisis of NEST saying, “Some students from North East approached Sparsha for counseling as they were finding it difficult to adjust with the new place. This approach made Sparsha to come up with an idea of forming NEST. Sparsha will be the second home for NEST and will be a support system.”
Eric Ozario, who is also the brain behind the Konkani winning Guinness Worlds record for longest marathon singing, said that he envies the rich culture of the beautiful hilly states. He added that he would like to see the states to come together in a bid to break the World Record for longest marathon singing. He said that 40 years back when he was in college there were only two students from the region. “I still remember a northeast student saying in a seminar that everybody looks at them as foreigners and they are not treated as a fellow Indian. The guilt I had since that day has been removed today as I am standing here with you.”
He also appealed to students not to feel insecure but to widen their networking circle with people. He assured NE students saying, ‘if Sparsha is the second home for NEST then Kalaangann is the third home’.
He also mentioned that the NE students are welcome to participate at Kalaangann monthly theatre so that the rest of the Mangaloreans can learn the rich culture of the region. George Pinto in his address said that he is ready to help the NE students regarding any problem related to legal or political concerns. “You are like my own brothers and sisters and if you require any service from me, I am there 24 hours for you.”
Veluhu Vero, President of NEST, said that though we are miles away from home, there are people who are there for us. He expressed his gratitude for Sparsha who helped NEST to contribute towards the betterment of society.
