Tripura maintains extra vigil

Agartala: To prevent militants’ bid to create trouble during the Republic Day celebration, the Government of Tripura has beefed up security arrangements in the state. Special attentions have been given on the important public installations, motor-stands and market palaces.

Even though the state has shown considerable wane in insurgency related incidents in the last three years, the authority has been maintaining extra alert this time because of the serial blasts that rocked Agartala on October 1 last year leaving 76 people seriously injured.

On the other hand, two train services between Assam and Agartala would be affected till Tuesday morning as the Northeastern Frontier Railway has suspended night service in the neighboring state due to threat perception associated with the Republic Day celebration.

The move of the government of Tripura has come following the numerous intelligence inputs that militants operating in the Northeast region and also some fundamentalist elements may disrupt the Republic Day celebration on January 26.

Prominent militant organisations such as United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), Manipur People’s Liberation Front (MPLF), an umbrella organisation of various militant outfits operating in Manipur, Tripura Peoples’ Democratic Front (TPDF) and Kamotapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) had announced on January 20 in a joint statement to boycott the Republic Day celebration. These militant organisations also said that a general strike will be called on the Republic Day. (NNN)

Court respite for Congress MP from Guwahati

From Correspondent

Guwahati: A Metropolitan Magistrate Court in New Delhi in its interim judgement delivered in a defamation suit filed by Congress MP from Guwahati Parliamentary Constituency, Kirip Chaliha, ruled in favour of him.

Congress leader Chaliha had filed the defamation suit against one Alka Pandey after the latter had claimed that she was provoked by the MP to malign Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

Ms Pandey had alleged before the 2006 Assam Assembly elections that she had indulged in a maligning campaign against Mr Gogoi in 2004 on the provocation of Chaliha, another former Congress MP Ranee Narah and a businessman Bhagya Kalita.

Earlier in 2004, prior to the Lok Sabha polls, Ms Pandey had launched a maligning campaign against the chief minister, making derogatory and disparaging remarks against him. While the other two accused did not pursue legal measures, Chaliha sued Ms Pandey and three newspapers that had carried the news. Of the three newspapers, two had apologized to Chaliha, while the third paper, ‘Asomiya Khobor’, did not respond and hence, was made one of the accused in Chaliha’s defamation suit.

The Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Sudesh Kumar ruled recently that ‘it prima facie appears that the complainant has been defamed’. Whiling giving ruling in favour of Chaliha, the court summoned Ms Pandey and other accused -- chief editor, publisher and New Delhi staff report of Asomiya Khobor – to appear before the Court on February 28 next.

Mr Chaliha, welcoming the interim judgement, said it proved that he was being dragged into the controversy and dropped hint about involvement of his rivals within the party behind it. He said he would pursue the issue with the party leadership. (EoM)
