NE outfits call strike on Jan 26

IMPHAL, Jan 24 – Four banned insurgent organisations have called a 17-hour general strike on Republic Day in Northeastern States, a joint statement issued by them said. The Manipur People’s Liberation Front (MPLF), United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), North Bengal-based Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) and Tripura People’s Democratic Front (TPDF) said in a statement that the strike would begin from 1 am and end at 6 pm on January 26.

The statement appealed to the people not to celebrate the Republic Day, saying people in the region were being suppressed under “divide and rule policy” of the Central Government. Official sources said the organisations have been boycotting Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations every year.

Security measures would be beefed up in Manipur to enable the State Government to celebrate the Republic Day, they said. – PTI

Shiroi continues to be tense

Dimapur : The ‘war-like’ situation in Shiroi village, Ukhrul created by the standoff between the Assam Rifles and NSCN (IM) cadres seem to be far from over with a senior NSCN (IM) leader today alleging that the AR is going back on their word to withdraw from the village. The Assam Rifles and the NSCN (IM) who were on a standoff for the past six days, agreed on January 23 to withdraw from Shiroi village within the following 72 hours.

NSCN (IM) dy kilonser, W Shimray this evening expressed strong displeasure over what he termed the Assam Rifles’ not keeping their word and commitment to withdraw from the village as agreed on January 23. “As per discussion, both parties will disperse from the village, however they (Assam Rifles) are reluctant to disperse from the area,” said Shimray adding that the situation is still very tense in Shiroi village.

He informed that the matter has been reported to the Ceasefire Monitoring Group and that they expect some ‘signal’ from the higher authority in the Home Ministry, Government of India. The NSCN (IM) activist however asserted that the cadres holed up inside the camp are ready to face any eventuality in case the situation goes out of hand.

A senior officer in the Ukhrul police, while stating that the two parties have not withdrawn from the village, however expressed hope that the situation would normalize. The people as well are optimistic that the situation would normalize very soon, he said.
