The minimum qualification required to pursue a career in anthropology is an undergraduate degree in anthropology. But it is better to study anthropology in the postgraduate level as well to get a good knowledge in this field.

ARCHAEOLOGY

Archaeology is the sub-division of anthropology. Archaeology is the study of old monuments, relics, inscriptions, excavation sites etc. Archaeologists investigate and report about the events occurred in a particular period in history. They also are responsible for maintaining the historical buildings and cultural heritage of a country.

JOB PROSPECTS :

The job opportunities in this relatively not-so-popular career are limited but interesting for those who have a passion for history and historical events. Apart from being a full time archaeologist, one can become a Research Officer within the Historical Division of the Ministry of External Affairs and Archaeological Survey of India. There are some employment opportunities with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, All India Handicrafts Board, Ministry of Education and Department of Tourism with the museums also.

A degree in History is always preferred if you want a career in this line of archaeology. There are specializations offered at the post graduate level such as MA in History of Art, MA in Conservation of Works of Art, MA in Museology and the likes. If you are interested in short term courses then certain colleges and institutes offer one year or two years' certificate/diploma courses too.


ARCHITECTURE

A student who has completed his 10+2 with physics, mathematics and chemistry can apply for this course. The selection procedure involves a written test which is conducted by the respective college or by the Council of Architecture.

BEAUTICIAN

WHAT IS IT?

Rather than high academic support, this profession requires highly skill training. Normally the beautician courses are of short duration and training can pursue after standard Xth or XIIth.

COMMERCIAL PILOT

The job of a commercial pilot has everything from good money to glamour and travelling. But apart from all those attractive things the job of a commercial pilot makes him responsible for the aircraft he flies and the lives of his passengers. An airline pilot is in command of a flight. During the flight he is assisted by a co-pilot. Pilots check the pre-flight plan one before the scheduled take-off.

Flying can be pursued as a hobby as well as a full time career. Unfortunately the number of vacancies in this field are very few. After acquiring the Commercial Pilot License (CPL) one can join any commercial airline or can serve in any of the private airlines such as Reliance, Tisco etc. One can also go in for Short Service Commission in the Indian Airforce as a pilot officer. If you do your CPL from reputed institutes such as Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Academy (IGRUA), Raebareli and score well national airlines such as Air India and Indian Airlines pick you up from the campus itself. As first officers pilots draw around 8000 Rs. per month. However they are paid much more ( 15,000 Rs.-22,000 Rs.) in the private airlines.

COURSE DETAILS

Educational eligibility required for joining the SPL flying course is 10+2 with physics and mathematics. Medical fitness test granted by AFCME is also needed. A person is required to give pilot aptitude test as well. There are mainly three levels of certificates required for flying. The first level certificate is the Student Pilot License ( SPL). Second level is the Private Pilot License (PPL). Commercial Pilot License (CPL) is the third certificate procured after 250 hours of flying training. One can also become a helicopter pilot for which one needs to have Commercial Helicopter Pilots License (CHPL). The highest category of certificates in this line is the Air Transport Pilot License (ATPL). After getting ATPL one can fly any kind of aircraft.


DESIGNING & ART

The most important pre-requisite for a designer is an interest and aptitude for art. An innovative and open mind is something that can prove invaluable to any designer.

A career in designing can be pursued after 10+2 or graduation in any of the arts, commerce and science stream. The period of the course ranges from 1 to 5 years depending on the type of stream one gets admitted to. ENGINEERING

WHAT IS IT ?

DETAILS OF THE COURSE

Students who have completed their 10+2 with a certain percentage in physics chemistery and mathematics can apply for this stream. This is a 4 year course after which one gets a degree of Bachelor of Techonology or Bachelor of Engineering(B.Tech\B.E.). An aspiring student to get admission has to sit for the enterance examinations conducted by various institutes state and central govt. After completing B.Tech an engineer can go for post graduate courses for which he has to qualify in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) or National Eligibility Test (NET of UGC). There is also a provision for post graduate course after 10+2 which is a 5 year integrated course.

FINANCE & ACCOUNTANCY

WHAT IS IT ?

With the increase of trading activity and opening up of more markets, careers in finance and accounts have gained tremendous popularity. The increase in the demand for these services has grown to such a level that it is one of the largest employment sectors. The different departments in the sector of commerce, accounts and finance are Cost & Work Accounts, Financial Analyst, Banking, Chartered Accountancy, Company Secretary and Insurance. To make a career in the field of commerce, accounts and finance almost all the courses can be done after 10+2 or after graduation. To become an Cost Works Accountant one has to be a commerce graduate or should have done ICWAI exams after 10+2. To qualify as Financial Analyst one should have done CFA programme or should have an MBA specialization with finance. CA can be taken up after 10+2. One has to be a member of Institute of Chartered Accountants to be a Chartered Accountant.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

To become a linguist one must have the aptitude to grasp a language.After 10+2 one could take a three year graduate degree (B.A.) or a five year integrated language course in a university. One could also learn a foreign language in a language institute run by embassies and consulates of foreign countries. Language courses can also be done part time. Students generally learn Japanese, Italian, German, Russian, Chinese, Spanish, Persian and Arabic.


HOTEL MANAGEMENT

There are five main departments in any hotel : Food and Beverage Services, Housekeeping, Front Office, General Operations and Sales and Marketing. Broadly speaking the job prospects in this industry include working in Hotels in any of the five above mentioned departments, Restaurants, Hotel consultancy services, catering etc. One could also open small hotels, restaurants or bakeries or can work in airlines as well.

If you want to go in this profession of Hotel Management a Diploma / Degree in Hotel Management from a recognised institution is a must. The eligibility criteria for admission to a Hotel Management Institute is 10+2 . Fluency in English is compulsory. Some Management Training Schemes are also available for graduates in any discipline from a recognised university.

INTERIOR DESIGNING & DECORATION

Interior designing and interior decoration have long been the professions having considerable glamour and money and with every passing day the consciousness on these subjects is increasing. There is a basic difference between interior designing and interior decoration. Interior designers have formal training in the field and have great deal of technical knowledge of building and structures. Interior designers work in close co-operation with the architects in planning the space. They prepare a layout of interior spaces, ventilation, drainage, electrical circuits, air-conditioning etc. for maximum use of space in a practical manner. Interior designers combine technical perfection along with functionality. Interior decorators , meanwhile, do not necessarily need any formal training in the field. Interior decoration needs a great deal of imagination, creativity and love for playing with colors and space. Decorator gives advice on the appropriate color scheme, texture, fabric, light effects and decorative materials such as wall papers & tapestry. Interior decorators arranges the color scheme and furniture along with furnishings in a completed interior.

CAREER PROSPECTS :

Mostly an interior designer or decorator works as a freelancing consultant. You can also work under an Interior designer in the initial years of your career. There are various job opportunities as theatre & set designers and exhibition designers as well.

COURSE DETAILS :

A three year interior designing or decoration course can be pursued immediately after 10+2 . Many institutes offer a five year course in interior design too. But what one must remember is that professional training is just to know the technical details of the profession. One must have style and creativity to stay in business in this challenging field.

JOURNALISM

Journalism has long been a very respected and sought after career. Most of the creative people , who have a flair for writing, like to go into this profession. Journalism was earlier associated with the print media only. But with the starting of hundreds of private satellite channels and radio channels the scope of Journalism has increased manyfolds. LAW & CIVIL SERVICES

WHAT IS IT ?

The stability and maintainance of law and order in a country depends on an efficient administration and a fair legal framework.The civil service and law are the most basic social institutions without which there will be anarchy and no social system can exist.In every country therefore there is a requirement for experts in the legal and civil services to have stability in the country.

Law-Law graduates can practice law in court as judges, solicitors, advocates, legal executives , in the defense services as political advisors in business houses or as lawyers representing the government. In today’s world large number of MNCs’ consulting firms are emerging. Lawyers get attractive opportunities to work with them.

Civil Services - The civil services are made up of two sectors the All India Service and the Central Service. The officers in the Central Services serve only the Government Of India they compromise - The Indian Postal Service, The Indian Railway Service, The Indian Foreign Service, The Indian Custom and Central Excise Service, The Indian Defence Estates Service, The Indian Ordinance Factory, Central Trade Service, Indian Civil Accounts Service, Posts of Assistant Commandant in the Central Industrial Security Force, Indian Audit and Accounts Service, Indian Information Service and The Indian Revenue Service.

The officers appointed to the All India Services by the Government of India are placed at the disposal of different states. These services are-(a) The Indian Administrative Service (b)The Indian Police Service and (c) the Indian Forest Services.

DETAILS OF THE COURSE

To be eligible for a course in law students can enter after completion of 10+2. This is a five year course after which one gets a degree of B.A.LLB (Hons)

There is also a three year LLB course for graduates. For post graduation there is a full time course for two years after which one gets a masters degree of LLM or a one year diploma course.

The U.P.S.C.(Union Public Service Commission) conducts the civil service examination. A candidate applying for the civil services must be a graduate from a recognised university he should be between the age of 21 and 28 and a citizen of India. He can attempt the examination only thrice.

LIBRARY SCIENCE AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Ever since print was invented 5 centuries ago libraries have been repositories of knowledge, information and entertainment. The employment opportunities for librarians lie with numerous Public / Government libraries, academic libraries in schools, colleges, universities and other academic institutions. Recruitment to jobs in government and university libraries is conducted through the University Grants Commission only. Foreign embassies, specialist academies attached to research and academic institutions and private organisations also provide good employment opportunities.

COURSE DETAILS :

One can join as a library clerk or assistant after doing a certificate or diploma course in library science. But to grow in this profession one needs to have higher degrees in this field. A degree in Bachelor of Library Science is offered after graduation. B.Lib. is a one year course. Masters degree can be pursued after having attained a degree in Bachelor of Library Science.

MANAGEMENT

WHAT IS IT ?

Management is an interdisciplinary science which is a merger of all social sciences. MERCHANT NAVY

Merchant navy as a career is the right choice for those who wish to explore the sea and visit new and exotic places all over the world. It is one career which has always been famous for its handsome pay packets and never-ending adventures. Merchant navy as a concept means carrying cargo and passengers from one country to other via sea. Its fleet includes cargo ships, container ships, barge carrying ships, tankers, bulk carriers, passenger ships etc.


CAREER PROSPECTS

There are three main areas in merchant navy

· deck department,
· engine department
· service department.

The deck department has captain, chief officer, second officer, third officer and other junior officers mainly involved in navigation, loading and unloading of the cargo. The second department is the engine department responsible for installation or repairing of ship engines, supervising and the mechanical and electrical work. This department consists of the chief engineer, radio officers, electrical officers and junior engineers, who also coordinates the activities of the engine and the room crew. The main work of the service department is to look after the kitchen, laundry, medical facilities etc.

COURSE DETAILS

Appointments are made at different levels in merchant navy. Minimum qualification required to enter the maritime education is 10 + 2 with PCM. One should have a 6/6 eyesight and should be in excellent health for the job requires long stretches of hard work. Maritime training institutions come under the administrative control of Directorate General of Shiping. T.S. Chanakya (Mumbai) conducts a three year degree course - B.Sc. in Nautical Science. It also involves a one year on-board training after the completion of the degree. The 4 year Engineering degree for becoming a marine engineer is provided by the Marine Engineering Reseach Institute(MERI). This degree from MERI is recognized by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (Education). For selection in T.S. Chanakya or in MERI one has to give a common entrance examination of IIT-JEE. The total number of seats is, however, not fixed and depends on the number of vacant seats each year.

PERFORMING ARTS

As the name suggests, performing arts include a course or professional training in the field of acting, dancing, music or choreography. A training in performing arts thus aims to produce good entertainers and performers who can make a programme successful. Although acting, dancing and music were always considered as arts to be pursued as hobbies only. But with the widespread growth of television and radio more and more people are taking up these arts as full time careers.

Dance: As dancing is mostly considered as entertainment, therefore a professionally employed dancer is hard to be seen and hence dancing can only become a career for a few handful of people among the many thousands who learn dancing.

Dance therapy: Dance therapists can be professionally employed as health care professionals or in various treatment centers for the emotionally disturbed ,the elderly or the mentally and physically disadvantaged ones.

Dance critic: Dance critics find jobs as critics to write for specialists dance publications and daily newspapers.

Dance teaching: A main career area for dancers can be considered as dance teachers.

There are some employment opportunities for the musicians, dramatists and dancers in various art academies, radio and television centers, movie studios, films division, song and drama division etc. You can also go in for freelancing.

COURSE DETAILS

There is no formal education required to enter the field of acting, dancing and music. For music and dance training is provided in some schools and colleges. There are many private institutions offering courses in music and dance. For dramatics training is imparted by some institutions and drama companies.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography is an artistic means of presenting things which are best expressed visually. Sometime back the idea of being a professional photographer might not have sounded very appealing. But with the upsurge of mass communication and media photography has become an important part of communication. Photographers specialize in different fields and therefore there are plenty of opportunities in this field. The various specialization options are tabletop, portrait, food, news (press photography), industrial photography, nature, wildlife, sports and fashion or ad photography. The job of a photographer is a well-paid one. You can either do freelancing work or work for private newspapers, magazines or ad agencies. There are certain jobs available in the government section also.

COURSE DETAILS

Photography is one field where educational qualification doesn't actually matter. All one requires is an observant and keen eye for details. The artistic sensitivity is a must. And the more one practices the better his skills get. Some kind of training is required to get an idea of the basic know-how of photography. The courses in photography are offered in many schools at 10+2 level. 'Those who have cleared the photography exam in the 12th boards are eligible for a diploma / certificate course in photography. Photography is also a subject taught for the Applied Art/ Commercial Art degree programmes. There are many short term courses also which last for three to six months.

Travel and tourism trade has become a major foreign exchange earner in the recent years in India. Among the main job options are Travel agencies, National / State tourism departments, travel desks in five-star hotels, ground job in International / Private airline offices. You can also work as tourist guides or set up your own travel agency.

COURSE DETAILS

At the undergraduate level the eligibility criteria for admission to Travel and Tourism courses is to have passed the 10+2 examination. After graduation in any discipline one can pursue the postgraduate level courses. There are many short-term training programmes offered by several institutes and travel agencies. The training may last six months to two years depending on your choice of the course. Fluency in at least one foreign language gives you an edge over the others.
