Democratic Alliance of Nagaland ministry sworn in

Kohima, March 12 (NPN): A 12-member ministry of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) led by Neiphiu Rio was sworn in by Governor K. Sankaranarayanan at Raj Bhavan here on Wednesday.

Of the 12 ministers, nine belonged to NPF, one each to NCP and BJP and one Independent. The DAN, comprising NPF, BJP, NCP and Independents, mustered the support of 35 legislators in the 60-member assembly.

The eleven Cabinet ministers who took oath included Shürhozelie (NPF), P. Longon (NPF), G. Kaito (NPF), Doshehe Y. Sema (NPF), M.C. Konyak (BJP), T.R. Zeliang (NPF), Imkong L. Imchen (NPF), Kuzholuzo (NPF), Nyeiwang Konyak (NPF), Dr, Chumben Murry (NCP) and Dr. Ngangshi Ao (Independent).

The swearing-in ceremony was attended among others by CLP Leader I. Imkong, Congress MLA and former chief minister K.L. Chishi and senior officials of the State government and security agencies.

Later, the chief minister appointed 13 MLAs as Parliamentary Secretaries and administered them the oath of office and secrecy. Z. Lohe of the NPF was also appointed as Advisor to the chief minister (Political) with Cabinet status.

Addressing a press conference after the swearing-in ceremony, Rio disclosed that a DAN Political Affairs Committee would be constituted by Monday which would contact all sections of the people (both overground and underground) to bring reconciliation and oneness among the Naga society.

Rio assured that his government would not fail in its commitment to play the role of an active facilitator to bring about lasting peace, unity and oneness in the Naga family. "The need of the hour is peace and we will constitute a Political Affairs Committee at the earliest to strengthen our role of facilitator".

Congratulating DAN allies and appreciating party workers, Rio said the victory was possible because of their hard work and dedication.

Rio viewed the mandate as an endorsement of the manifesto of NPF and CMP of DAN and assured that DAN would work for the welfare of the people and development of the State with renewed vigour. In this connection, he solicited the cooperation of all sections of government and non-government agencies including civil societies.

Rio said his government would give continuous focus to youth and women empowerment, agri and allied sector, development of backward regions and the IT and IT-enabled sector. He appealed to DAN partners and party workers to extend their fullest cooperation. Further, he appealed to all sections to forget the bitterness of electoral contest and jointly contribute towards the progress of the State.

"I would expect our friends in the Opposition Bench to play a constructive role. Their suggestions shall always be received with a positive attitude," Rio said. Finally, he appreciated the media for playing a positive role during the period of election.

Protem Speaker

Dr. Neikiesalie Nicky Kire will be sworn in as Protem Speaker on March 13 (Thursday) at 11:30 am at the Raj Bhavan, an official release said. Meanwhile, Kiyanilie Peseyie of the NPF is likely to be re-elected as the speaker and Ralangthung, also of the NPF could be elected as deputy speaker of Assembly.

Independent candidate Shetoyi won the 33 Suruhuto seat defeating Khutovi of Congress by 796 votes. State election department informed Shetoyi polled 7,053 votes as against 6,257 by Khutovi and 40 by Hokheto of RJD.
