NEW DELHI, March 7 – India has reiterated its call for flush out operations against the North-east based militant outfits taking shelter in adjoining Myanmar, besides tightening of border vigil to check drugs trafficking and smuggling of arms. The issue of insurgents taking shelter on either side of the border and ways to prevent free movement across the international border were part of the discussion at the Home Secretary level talks between India and Myanmar that got underway here today.
The Indian delegation is led by the Union Home Secretary, Madhukar Gupta, while the Myanmar delegation is headed by deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Brig. General Phone Swe.
An official sources said that the discussions are taking place on various issues including security-related matters, smuggling of arms and narcotic drugs, effective border management, border trade and cross-border projects.
This is the 14th round of annual Home Secretary level talks between the two countries. The talks would conclude on Monday. The previous round of talks was held in Myanmar in February last year.
With Myanmar cooperating with India on taking action against the militants, the inherent tensions that usually marks such talks with Bangladesh is absent. The military junta has been from time to time mounting operations against the insurgents, which have set up camps across Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur in close coordination with Indian Army.
Majority of Manipuri rebel outfits, besides the ULFA, NSCN (K) and I-M faction have safe bases in Sagain Division of the country. The unguarded 1,643 km of international border, considered highly porous has become haven for drug traffickers and arms smugglers.
India and Myanmar had decided to fence 10-odd km of international border in Moreh in Manipur. However, the project is yet to take off.
