Imphal | May 15 : The All Tribal Students’ Union of Manipur (ATSUM) has called a 12-hour general strike in all the five hill districts of Manipur Monday, May 18, from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. The strike is against the alleged failure of AD Singh, director of the Jawahar Lal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) to give a ‘positive response’ to the ATSUM’s demand for a ten-seat reservation for Scheduled Tribes in the recent appointments to JNIMS for various vacancies.
The ATSUM however informed the strike would exempt all educational institutions including colleges and educational departments. The students’ body called on all students and those vehicles transporting them to wear black badges as a sign of protest. The ATSUM will discuss further line of action after the bandh, it stated.
3 Churches attacked in Manipur
Dimapur, May 15 (MExN): On the heels of reported attacks on the Christian community in Manipur, the All India Christian Council has appealed the chief minister of Manipur to ensure safety to Meitei Christians and other minorities in Manipur. Two Baptist churches and a Catholic church were reportedly attacked on Monday at three different locations.
The Council in a press release today stated that the recent attacks on Christians in Manipur suggests of some newly formed fundamentalists promoting hindutva ideology in the state, particularly targeting the Meitei Christian minority. This week’s serial attack is very different from the previous attacks, the Council asserted.
On May 11 the Baptist Church at Phumlou and Taothrong in Imphal west district was set afire at around 10:40 pm and a Catholic church at Phayeng was also set on fire by unknown miscreants. A day before, on May 10, an unknown person suspected to be a member of a newly formed group warned church members to stop church building construction in Lamshang in Imphal west district, stated a letter to the Manipur chief minister by the All India Christian Council on Thursday.
In the recent attacks, the Council asserted, the attackers used the same approach in burning all the three churches by dumping straw and spraying inflammable liquids on the church furniture at night and fled the scene. Fear among the Christian community is growing with the nature of systemic attacks on minority communities in the state.
Dr Paul, national secretary public affairs of the Council stated, “The kind of attack on three churches was preplanned and carried out in an organized manner.” The Council appealed the chief minister not to “wait and watch” but take immediate action to prevent another Gujarat 2002 or Kandhamal like situation created by fundamentalists.
