Manipur Repeats Burning of Churches after Five Years Gap. Hindutva like Communal Forces Must be Opposed

Imphal, May 12, 2009: Manipur repeats the burning of Churches in valley after 5 years. Two churches reported burnt down and one attempted in Imphal West District of Manipur. A New communal force is suspected to be behind the serial attack on Churches.

A Baptist Church building in Phumlou in Imphal West district was attempted to burn by unknown persons on May 11 at around 10.40 PM and a Catholic in Phayeng in same district yesterday night around 10 PM. Partial Church buildings, furniture including pulpits, curtains, mats, mike speaker boxes and clock belonging to both the churches were gutted by fire.

An unconfirmed report reaching All India Christian Council told that a Church building at Chaothong in Imphal West district was also targeted by burning straw dump in front of church building on same day.

The fact finding team of All India Christian Council led by State Secretary visited the churches and stocked the situation. The police have registered the case and the culprits are not identified. Information collected the church members and surrounding villages suspect a newly founded organisation (name withheld) is in suspect of serial attack on churches.

Meitei Baptist Association reports Christian Council that an outlaw outfit warned to stop a church building construction at Lamshang village in same district on same day the Phumlou church was attacked.

North East Support Centre & Helpline Spokes Person and All India Christian Council Regional Secretary Madhu Chandra says, "There is report of an uprising Hindutva like communal force in Manipur which has started targeting Meitei Christian minorities in valley. To save from communal riots like Gujarat 2002 and Kandhamal, all civil society must resist and oppose the uprising neo communal force in Manipur."

In 2004 and 2005, the Christian world and civil societies were socked with the unreported attacks on Christians in Manipur. Over 10 churches were burnt down, pastors and mission workers were attacked, and two death bodies were removed from cemetery and reconverted the death bodies to Hinduism during the period.

At the rise of attack on Christians in Manipur valley in 2004 and 2005, All India Christian Council had to rush to state Capital in March 2005 and had to appeal Manipur Chief Minister Mr. W. Ibobi Singh and then the State Governor to stop the attack on Meitei and Rongmei minority Christians. There after ceased the attack on Meitei Christians while some Rongmei churches in valley reported suffering sanctions from societies.

All India Christian Council and North East Support Centre & Helpline, New Delhi also condemns the killing of 9 migrant in Keibul Lamjao National Park by unidentified persons late Monday night. Such inhuman must be immediately stopped. NE Support Centre & Helpline fears that such killing can irrupt communal attack on North East communities living outside of Manipur state.
