KWMHR, KSO warn of agitation

IMPHAL, May 9: The Kuki Women’s Movement for Human Rights (KWMHR) and the KSO Sugnu Block have warned of intense agitation demanding removal of commandos currently attached to Sugnu police station in case the commandos mend their attitude of ill-treating and looking down upon villagers.

Speaking to media persons at Sugnu Tribal this afternoon, secretary general of KSO Sugnu Block, Lalmoi Haokip said that commandos used to fire several rounds in the previous night of the day on which commandos attached to the Sugnu PS would be replaced by a new team of commandos.

In one such recent case, commandos who were attached to Sugnu PS fired several rounds of gun shots at Sugnu bridge over Imphal river, Sugnu Langching Khul and Sugnu Chakpikarong near St Alphonso Convent at about 11 pm of May 7.

A cow was also killed in the firing. However, the owner of the cow could not be established till date, Lalmoi said.

By virtue of having two Higher Secondary Schools, seven High Schools in addition to UJB and LP schools, Lalmoi claimed that Sugnu was a centre of education.

Indiscriminate and unwarranted firing at such centre would cause serious mental disturbance and leave deep impact on the psyche of more than 3000 students who were at different stages of learning, he said while conveying that KSO yearned for peaceful educational environment.

Appealing to stop the practice of indiscriminate firing at the time of leaving Sugnu PS, he cautioned that the people may launch an intense agitation to withdraw commandos from the PS if the commandos who joined at the PS recently give a definite assurance with regard to the appeal at the earliest.

The KSO functionary also appealed to the commandos not to conduct frisking in “excessive manner” in inebriated condition by forcing people to remove even their shoes or opening vehicle parts.

Highlighting the inadequacies in Sugnu Community Health Centre and the consequent plight of the villagers, Lalmoi said that the Community Health Centre would be sealed in case two doctors and the required number of staff and other necessary materials are sent to the CHC by May 15.

He further sought attention of the Government towards the woes of people regarding pathetic power supply.

Kuki Women’s Movement for Human Rights president Luniang also decried the practice of firing by commandos.
